  • October4. I47s> THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 15 Surles on sports The Cats Gerald Harp zoomed to third nationally In pass receiving with his 10 catches against Elon. In four games he now has 25 receptions. Saturday's game with the Citadel should be a good test lor the Catamount's passing olfense. Currently, the Bulldogs rank sixth In the league In pass defense, giving up 155 yards a game and allowing their opponents a completion percentage of nearly 60 percent. But they are tough—they gave up most of their yardage in two early season losses to Presbyterian and Navy Watch for the Southern Conference Players of the Week to unpile from more than one heap in Charleston. WCU's linebacker Rickey Smith the Defensive Player of the Week and The Citadel's Tim Russell, the Offensive winner will be going head to head If you can get to the game be prepared folks say that Johnson-Hagood Stadium is one ol the loudest stadiums in the free world....it's the Cadets stomping on the steel bleachers. This week's game rates as a crucial one for the Cats—a win keeps us in the thick of the conference race. Some of the most exciting news lately is the NBC/TVS tie-in to telecast several conference basketball games this winter, including the tourney final. WCU gets great coverage this season, after being; snubbed last year. The Cats1 January 12 battle with the Citadel will be telecast, as will the Febuary 9 game with Marshall. Both are away games. One of the nicest things to happen on campus lately was the cross country team's annililation of the Apps, Women's tennis by Steve Surles 17-39, Saturday. Coach Paul Jones tells me that placing the top three runners like the Cats did is equivalent to a shutout or skunking in other sports. Freshman Sam Shirley and some of his cohorts looked very strong running on a very wet course in Saturday's run...and win over ASU is good news Football prediction Appalachian St. 26 UTC 24....Why? Homecoming in Boone and the Apps have last year's 72-14 loss to the Mocs on their minds. Even though the Chattanooga defense ranks an impressive third in the SC giving up just 275 yards a game it hasn't been given the kind of test the Apps can give it. ASU will be super flred-up..."Kickoff" has the Mocs an 11-point favorite. Why does everyone talk about the Pirate's Dave Parker when the man who makes them go is Willie Stargell... he's their clutch hitter. In case the score didn't filter down to you...The Apps lost heir self-proclaimed "THE BIG GAME" soccer tussle with Chapel Hill 1-0... WCU's David Jones leads the conference in goals with 6, while Applachian's Kingsley Esabamen leads in total points with 9, on 5 goals and 4 assists ABC-TV Monday Night Football has always had a lion's share ol upsets, but rarely two consecutive ones like the Browns 26-7 win over the Cowboys and Monday night's Green Bay rout over New England. The games are so interesting that Howard Cosell is almost enjoyable on occasion. Almost, I said Now that the New Administration Building has been dedicated I wonder when work on the most Dressing need on this campus will be started —that being a student activity arena for basketball, concerts, and shows. The women's tennis team had a rough week of play losing to UNC-Greensboro 8-1 in Asheville, Elon College 5-2 in a rain shortened match Saturday in Cullowhee, and Mars Hill 9-0 Tuesday in Cullowhee. In the match against UNC-G Friday, only Karan Martinat won for the Lady Cats, 8-4 in a pro set match. Saturday, Martinat won again for Western, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 along with Valerie Rosa. The Lady Cats lost the rest of the singles and the doubles competition before the late afternoon rain washed out the match. Tuesday afternoon against Mars Hill the Lady Cats fell 9-0. Number one seed Karan Martinat lost to Jody Self, 6-4 and 6-3, and number two position Gail Parchesco fell to Wendy Turner 6-1 and 6-3 in tough matches. The loss drop* the Lady Cats record to 1-3. The next action is the October 13 tournament at Mars Hill. Men's tennis wins Bad weather played havoc with the men's tennis team schedule, but they were able to open their fall play with a 6-3 win over UNC-A. Mark Craig won the number one singles with a 6-1, 7-6 sweep while David Williams took the number two singles w-6, 6-2, and 6-2. Craig and Williams teamed to win the number one doubles with a 6-4, 6-3. Rain kept the Catamounts from fully competing in the Gardner-Webb Tournament In Boiling Springs over the weekend. Mark Craig and David Williams did advance into the third round singles and fourth round doubles and defeated the number two doubles team from eventual tournament champion Guilford College. Friday the club travels to Hickory to take on Lenoir-Rhyne College at 2:00 p.m. October 12 the Cats entertain Carson-Newman College in a 2:00 p.m. match in Cullowhee. Soccer fosses Volleyball takes second The Western Carolina women's volleyball team highlighted a busy week with a second place finish in the Mars Hill Tournament during the weekend. The Lady Cats reached the tournament semi-finals by defeating Mars Hill 15-10, 15-4 and Pembroke State 15-13, 15-10 and splitting with Concord (WVA) 16-4, 7-15 and Lenoir-Rhyne 3-15, 16-14. Western gave powerful Clemson a good trial in the preliminaries before losing 6-15 and 14-16. In the semi's the Lady Cats whipped Lenoir-Rhyne 15-3, 13-15, and 15-5 before falling to Clemson in the finals 6-15, and 8-15. Coach Judy Murray was pleased with the final showing, which pushed the overall record to 4-3 for the season. "We played some really good volleyball. Our players are playing better as their techniques are improving." Coach Murray was also pleased with some individual performances in the tournament. "We got some good performances from our setters, Kit Rae and Geneva Anderson. Andrea Thurn, Terry Taylor, Rae and Anderson hit well also. Terry Frye did a good job in the backcourt and at the net and was superb in her serving. She showed good hustle, too." Coach Murray reported, adding, "Wc also got good bench play from Michelle Hemphill, Diane Hallas, Sherri Kasch, Pre Prince, Teresa Whitaker and Norma Gibson. Our subs pulled us through in clutch situations." Tuesday in the team traveled to Boiling Springs for a Tri-match at Gardner-Webb. Western Lost the first set to Lenoir-Rhyne 8-15 and 13-15, but came back to defeat Gardner-Webb 8-15,15-11, and 15-13. The split put the Lady Cat's record at 5-4. The soccer team dropped a disappointing 3-1 decision to Davidson College Saturday on the Wildcats home field. The Catamounts fell behind in the first nine minutes of the game, 3-0, due largely to Western Carolina defensive errors. Coach Malcolm Loughlin's team rallied to dominate play the remainder of the game, but could manage to score only one goal—from Craig Cook on an assist from Paul Garth as the Cats fell to 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the Southern Conference. This week the Cats will travel to Erskine College on Wednesday and then return home for an important conference game with The Citadel Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Whitmire Stadium. Cross-country The cross country team came up with one of their biggest victories in many years as they destroyed Appalachian State, 17-39 in Cullowhee Saturday morning. Coach Paul Jones' carriers dominated the five-mile run, placing the top three positions and five of the first seven. Freshman Sam Shirley led all runners with a 27:13 time. It was Shirley's third first place finish of the season, while, Teammate Pat McLaughlin placed second with a 27:14 mark with Thorn Mahon adding a 27:18 showing time for third place. The victory over ASU was the first for a Western Carolina cross country team since 1976 and gave the Cats a 4-1 overall record, 3-1 in Southern Conference play. Appalachian's record dropped to 0-3, 0-2 with the loss. Saturday the Cats travel to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for a dual meet with the 49ers in nonconference action.
