  • Making it work Student knows ups and downs of owning a business Matthew Sink StaffWriter Nothing seems quite as stressful to a college student than the final two weeks of the semester. Teachers often assign last-minute projects or papers, which leaves students scrambling to find time for everything, as exams loom over the horizon. For Scott Welch, the pressures of college are only half the problem. As he struggles to finish his course work for the semester and prepare for finals, Scott also has to worry about his responsibilities at Subway. While many students work part-time jobs for extra money, Scott Welch has an unusual situation. Instead of simply working at Subway, Scott owns the Subway in Sylva and takes on all the management duties by himself. "It is very stressful for me right now," Welch said. "People call in sick, and I've got a class. I try not to let my professors know, though. I don't want them to think I'm making any excuses, and I don't want any special treatment." It is hard not to think about Welch as being special, however. A senior majoring in Management and Finance, he decided to try for a Subway franchise after seeing the success of one of his friends. "A friend of mine owns four Subway restaurants in Asheville," Welch said. "I went down, and he showed them to me, and I decided to pursue opening one in Sylva." The road to fulfilling his goal was not easy. Welch had to go to four different banks for financial support. Then came the struggle of actually opening the restaurant. Welch is reaping the fruits of his labor now, both financially and educationally. 'The best part of it is the experience that I am getting by owning a business and being able to run it. That's what I enjoy the most," said Welch. Welch feels that this experience has been most helpful in the classroom. This is particularly clear when he is assigned papers in management classes. After that, however, it is not all pay checks and glamour. "Other than the experience, it can really be a disadvantage as far as school is concerned, because I don't have time to study like other students do," said Welch. Despite the crunch on time, success is certainly no stranger to Scott Welch. The Subway in Sylva is doing extremely well, and he has recently secured a second franchise. This restaurant, in Murphy, is in the process of opening. After school, Welch plans to work for Subway as a Field Representative, inspecting stores around the state. He still plans to hold on to his stores and has plans in the works for a third, this time in Cherokee. As the final days of the fall semester slip away, crunch time has certainly hit college students everywhere. In the midst of semester ending projects and final exams, Welch has millions of tilings on his mind. Between his ever-increasing school work and his ever-expanding duties as owner and manager of two Subway restaurants, he has every reason to be burdened with stress during the holiday season. Still, the 22 year old senior handles the pressure, knowing that he is into something that will benefit him both now and on down the road. For Scott Welch, this is only the beginning. if *.• Scott Welch Photo by flax Hall SYLVA GLASS & MIRROR INC. Sights Windows Garage Doots Tom Keller, President
