  • Literary Societies Present Joint Program One of the most interesting features of Commencement was the joint program of the Columbian and Erosophian literary societies given Wednesday evening, May 27th. The entertainment was well balanced and rendered in a manner that gave evidence of careful preparation. The Journal, or yearly review, read by Miss Emma Lou Moss told something of the problems with which the societies deal, their aims, and the methods used to obtain the most from the work carried on by them. The progress made during the year was surprising. With the largest membership in their histories the two societies have purchased pianos, n v. banners and other valuable equipment which have added much to the attractiveness of the halls. Of the four debating contests held with Mars Hill College and the Hayesville High School an even break was made, the victories being won at each of the two schools and the defeats coming at home. The readings and declamations given by Alice Earle Edwards, Mary Carrington, Edgar Fisher, and Billiard Henson were well rendered and enjoyed by all. The speakers were all winners of gold medals in contests previously held and all proved themselves worthy of the prizes. Following these numbers and a piano solo by Hetty Green the girls of the Erosophian Society presented the review, "Lovers of the Ages." in which the following characters were typified: Cupids, Lucy Jane Hunter and David Brown; Minnehaha, Myrtle Abernathy; Helen of Tro Helen Saunders; Elaine, Emma Lou Moss; Ruth, Alice Earle Edward Lola Owen; Esther. Freda Fincherj Rachel, Louise Perry; Ellen. Burnctte Pitillo; Juliette, Zera Hall; Evangeline, Gussie Lee Harrell; Japanese Maid, Mary Hunter; Mrs. Browning, Alwayne Anderson; Dreamer, Lacy In the few minutes allotted them, the Columbians gave "Prom Sea to Sea," a series of songs from various wntr.es All characters wore typical costumes and presented their solos ln a manner which gave evidence of ™Mh training. Much credit is due «»• Arnold for her untiring efforts '"Preparing these numbers. Instead of the conventional reading of the Last Will and Testament, the Prophecy, and the Class History, an original three-act play was staged. The first act of the play dealt with the Past, and the characters in it were small girls of the community who each represented a member of the Senior Class. The second act was dated the Present, and was made up of two scenes. The first of these was a Sunday-evening gathering in Helen Saunders' and Emma Lou Moss' room. A typical feast from the Sunday paper bags was realistically portrayed, bringing in familiar incidents of school life. The second scene revealed a crowd of picnickers on a wienie roast. School songs, jokes about the students and faculty, and other touches of local color were introduced. The third and last act delved into the future, and revealed what the class expects to happen within the next ten years. The scene was laid in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Kelly, Mrs. Kelly being the former Miss Agnes Cloninger of the Class of '25. Mr. Kelly, selected from the Junior Class of the Normal School to complete the cast, was represented as the Dean of the Cullowhee Normal School at that time, which was 1940. The whole class returned to the Kelly home for a reunion, at which the careers of each member of the class were revealed. It might be mentioned that out of the twelve girls who graduated, only two had attained the heights of matrimony. All the others had achieved fame and distinction in other fields. Many changes were represented as having taken place at Cullowhee. The haracters of the play was as follow.: ACT I. Helen Saunders Marguerite Coward Maude Hopkins Katberine Brown Lois Wike Marie Wood Wilhomina Lane Lucy Jane Hunter Bessie Phetteplace ^Hael Brown Estelle Pace Hannah Lou Brown Emma Lou Moss Bleacadee Painter Bettie de Berry Doris Brown Agnes Cloninger Kate Stillwell Acts II and III. Parts taken by the characters themselves, who were the Seniors. Those not represented in Act I were Jeannette Feagan, Mary Flintom, Lula McGlohon. t0I1i Italy, Carty Ned,"' tnf d Banner, and ^yne Battle. H. C.
