"Roots out of Dry Ground" WCU prof, says it has scholarly Interest1 By Phil Harden STAFF WRITER Routs Out of Dry Ground, a new book by Dr. Reuben Swanson, a WCU professor of philosophy and religion, is as impressive as its author. The book is a selection of sermons given by Dr. Swanson some of which date back to 1957. The sermons were originally written in prose, but now exist in Roots Out of Dry Ground in poetic form. Dr. Swanson's wife Marian, who is teaching speech communications at Western, recognized the poetic quality of his sermons. It \;is on her recommendation that he wrote them in poetic form and entitled the book Roots Out of Dry Ground. The title comes from an Easter sermon in which Dr. Swanson quotes the prophet Isaiah: "He grew up before him like a young plant like a root out of a dry ground." As a proud new owner of an autographed copy I have found Dr.Swanson's Roots Out of Dry Ground to be filled with sensitivity, insight, and concern and am again inspired by the creative endeavors of Western's remarkable staff. In talking about writing his current book, Dr. Swanson said, "I violate all the rules of preparation, the composition just flows and sometimes I don't even have to rewrite or reorganize a single word." But not to worry all you English and professional writing students, Dr. Swanson admits that sometimes, as any writer does, he has to slave over his work. However, you wouldn't know it by reading it; didn't someone once tell me that was the sign of a good writer? Roots Out of Dry Ground flows with vivid description and one writer said, "Rather than sermonizing, he takes the reader on journeys of beauty, emotion, and understanding." The writing style and content make for enjoyable reading. Presently unci seemingly without reprieve. Dr. Swanson is now slaving over his next book while teaching at Western and preaching at St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Dr. Reuben Swanson His new book will be a translational work; he's translating the Bible from the original papyrus paper writings. Dr. Swanson said, "I'm reading in these constantly." No, he doesn't have them, he's got pictures and he's even using an IBM something or other to help. Dr. Swanson is doing the translation in a "more accurate and complete way than has ever before been tried. Candidly he says, "This will be of particular interest to scholars." His new book, Roots Out of Dry Ground, is available in hardcover or paperback and Dr. Swanson hopes to have an autographing session soon. His book is the reflection of a sensitive, interesting, scholar and just one nt WCU's staff! Check it out! Note: the illustrations in Roots Out of Dry Ground were done by Lee Budhal of the WCU Art Department.
