  • September 8,1999 CaroliniaN ports Final Round of the Judaculla Cup p. 15 September 8, 1999 Women's Soccer Sweeps Weekend Road Swing Nardia Moore Tallies First Goal photo by Don Costello Freshman Nardia Moore, shown here against Clayton State made history on Saturday by scoring the first-ever women's soccer goal, on a penalty kick in a 2-0 victory over Troy State. by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor MORROW, Ga. — In what can become an exhausting and redundant season of firsts for Western Carolina's women's soccer program, the two most important "firsts" occured this past weekend as the Lady Cats soccer team travelled to Alabama and Georgia. Last Saturday at Troy State in Alabama, Nardia Moore, the program's first-signee, scored the first goal in wrTT •- WCU ^-u a women's Clayton St 0 soccer history en route to their first-ever win, 2-0. The winning continued in steamy Georgia on Sunday, as WCU defeated the Lady Lakers of Clayton College and State University, 5-0. "We had a very successful weekend," said head coach Debbie Hensley. "I told the team that we were coming down here to take care of business, and we did." The Cats jumped out on top of CCSU early when Morgan Foresman put one past the Laker goal keeper just six and three- quarter minutes into the contest. Ten minutes later, 26:58, Foresman tallied her second goal of the season, and game, off of a Kelly Barker direct kick. Yasmin Morton's second goal of the season put the Catamounts up 3-0 at the half. She added, "One of the biggest things was putting that first goal away. Plus, that first win took a lot of pressure off of us. It was hotter here and in Alabama than where we've practiced or played. But, I told the team that we had to get over it and just play." Looking back to this past summer, the United States women's soccer team won the World Cup on penalty kicks. With reference to that, it only seems Fitting that Nardia Moore's first WCU goal came on a PK. "[Scoring the first goal] was exciting," commented Moore. "I was praying that I would make it. It took some of the pressure off of the team. Once we scored a goal, we knew that we could." Not only has Moore tallied scores, but five different Catamounts have put the ball over the goal line. Freshmen Yasmin Morton and Morgan Foresman have both recorded two scores apiece this season. In addition to getting their first wins, the Lady Cats have their first winning-streak at two games, and evened their record to 2-2 before coming home to start conference play this Sunday at the WCU Soccer field. "This [winning streak] has pumped us up. We know now that we can win," explained Moore. The Cats return to action this Sunday as Georgia Southern comes to Cullowhee for a 1:00 pm start. Men's and Women's Cross Country Finish Fourth by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina Cross Country teams opened up their 1999 season by hosting the Papa's Pizza Invitational this past Saturday. Both squads finished fourth. Head coach Danny Williamson was pleased with the way both of his teams performed in the meet. He did, however, comment that he'd like to see them place runners closer together in the finishing order. Included in the field were Southeastern Conference members Georgia and Tennessee, and the Atlantic Coast Conference's Clemson Tigers, as well as conference rival, UNC Greensboro. Williamson says that running here in Cullowhee, at home for the cross country teams, is good both for the program and for the team. "Our course is one of the tougher courses that we run," explained Williamson. "It's good training and it is exciting running on our own course." In the women's 5-kilometer race, Erin Jones of the University of Georgia finished five seconds ahead of Tennessee's Angie Pothier to win the individual title, en route to giving the Bulldogs the team title. Clemson edged out Tennessee for second, with the Catamounts and Georgia State rounding out the top five. "I thought our women came out and ran a good, solid race. We ran against some tough competition, and only 10 points separated second and fourth place," said Williamson. Sophomore Holly Bright was Western's top finisher, with a time of 18:44, with Jenny Warfford's 12th place finish as WCU's second scorer. "We have seven runners that can run at the front of the pack. We've got talent on this side, we've just got to get them to run together at the front," added Williamson. In the men's five-mile race, the Clemson Tigers placed five runners in the top 10 to beat Georgia by 27 points to take the title. CU's Jason Meany finished with a time of 25:38, second overall to unattached Gareth Wilford, but first in the team event. Jesse Norman was Western Carolina's highest finisher in ninth with a time of 26:30. Caleb Bailey's time of 27:18 was 22 overall, but was Western's second finisher. "It was a good showing for our first three runners, all freshmen," stated Williamson about his men's team performance. "We're real young. We need more from our older guys, but their leadership will come around." Western Carolina will host their second meet of the season this weekend. Southern Conference teams from East Tennessee State, Furman, and Wofford will be in Cullowhee for the meet. Other teams include High Point, Brevard, Emory, Georgia Military, and the nationally-ranked University of Tennessee men's team will compete for the title. The event starts Saturday at 9:15 a.m. with the men's race, followed at 9:45 by the women's race. After the collegiate races are over, WCU will host a high school event where 15 schools will run the course. photo by Don Costello Caleb Bailey (I), Jay Canty (2), and the 1998 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Michael Farmer (3) making the turn over "The Bridge" on the WCU Cross Country Course.
