  • Page 12 Legalize Hitchhiking It's a bonus to learn something while you are on vacation from school. We learned that hitchhiking is still illegal on IS interstales. Al least it's legal elsewhere in North Carolina if you Maud on the shoulder of the road. In many states, including Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky, it is illegal to solicit rides on any roads. But one can't gel any where of great distance unless one is on an interstate. Since the government is so sclf-righteously espousing energy saving philosophies like the 55 mph speed limit, the 68 degree setting of home furnaces, and the emphasis on ear-pooling, we think it ought lo legalize hitchhiking on all US high w a v s of all descriptions in all stales. The old lip-service reasons why thumbing is illegal on thoroughfares have been antiquated. The possibility of a driver causing an accident while stopping for a thumber has been greatly minimized by Ihe new lower speed limit. The once believed fact that all hitchhikers are bums, are probably broke, and would steal you blind has been obliterated by the facts of recession, fuel shortages, inflation, and higher unemployment. A lot of clean, decent, honorable, but poor people are hitchhiking today's roads not out of choice, but of necessity. There simply are a lot of people who cannot afford cars, plane tickets, or bus rides who are not criminals, runaways, and communists. And although there is no way to force people to help people less fortunate than themselves, the legalization of hitchhiking could reassure timid motorists, could take the unwarranted fear out of giving a fellow human a ride down the road if there's room. let's stop making criminals of hitchhikers. | Reprinted from The Western Carolinian 6/17/76]. Last paper No doubt, most of Tuesday afternoon's grumblings were about the absence of the Western Carolinian. "Damn slack hippies up at Joyner." Well, we were slack. We could have only one paper this week because of impending professors' deadlines, rapidly multiplying problems to solve, and innumerable term papers to write. After due consideration, it was decided that Thursday was the best day to put out this week's exciting ish. Sorry about the inconvenience but thanks for the break!
