  • PAGE 2/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/APRIL 19, 1979 Carolinian newsbriefs Flag auditions All women interested in auditioning for the 1979 Flag Corps, and auxilliary unit of the University Marching Show Band, will begin practice today and tomorrow, at Reid Gymn in the handball court area from 4 to 6 p.m. The purpose of the practice sessions will be to teach a flag routine of similar difficulty as normally used in performance by the flag corps with the marching band during the fall. All women are advised to wear sneakers and comfortable attire for the practice sessions and final closed audition. The final auditions will be judged on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. in Reid Gymn. Preliminary finalists will be scheduled for an interview by the director of bands and instructors in the university band office between 1 and 3 p.m. The final twenty candidates will be posted on the lower lobby bulletin board of the Music/English building at 6 p.m. Prior experience in flag work is not necessary and all women who will be full-time students at WCU next fall are eligible to try out. Jap language Japanese language and tradition will be the topics of discussion in the auditorium of the Natural Sciences Building from 6 until 8:50 p.m. today as WCU's international studies course on Japan continues. Dr. Pat Umfress and Ms. Heemi Kim will talk about basic words and expressions, pronunciation and calligraphy. There will be an introduction to "cha-no-yu," the Japanese tea ceremony, and a guest lecture on Japanese gardens by Sam Gray of the WCU Mountain Heritage Center. Films to be shown include "Noh Drama," "Invitation to Tea," "Calligraphy," and "The Performing Arts, Part II." The class will be open to all interested persons. Horowitz speaks David Horwitz, producer of "CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite," will speak at 8 p.m. April 26 in the Little Theatre under the sponsorship of the WCU Visiting Scholars Program. During his visit, Horwitz will address WCU classes in broadcasting and journalism and will hold an informal question-and-answer session at 9:30 a.m. in Room 132 of Killian Building. Admission to both programs will be free to the public. Horwitz took on his present duties in September, 1978, after spending two years as executive producer of the weekday program, "The CBS Morning News." He had earlier been associate producer of both the evening and the morning news for CBS. Before joining CBS News in 1972, Horwitz spent ten years as film editor, director, newscast producer, and assistant news director at television station KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco. Horwitz is a graduate of San Francisco State University. Faculty Shakespeare The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare, will be performed this Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8:15 p.m. in the Music-English recital hall. The production, sponsored by the English, Music and Speech and Theatre Arts departments, is a part of the week long festivities for the dedication of the Music-English building. Tickets for the show are $2 for adults, $1 for students, and 50 cents for children. Reservations may be made by calling the Speech and Theatre Arts Department at 227-7491. According to the show's director, Dr. Donald L. Loeffler, "The cast is mainly English faculty with a few others." The cast for The Merchant of Venice includes Dennis McKevlin as the Duke of Venice, Warren DuPree as Morocco, Anthony Brown as Arragon, Karl Nicholas as Antonio, Brian Martine as Bassanio, Terry Neinhuis as Gratiano, Keith Kolakowski as Salerio, Jim Nicholl as Salanio, George Loftis as Lorenzo, John Davlin as Shylock, Sherry Hodge as Tubal, Steve Eberley as Launcelot Gobbo, Jim Nicholl as Old Gobbo, Tish Merrill as Portia, Constance Head as Nerissa, Gracia Slater as Jessica, Mark Kijewski as Balthasar, Stephen Winters_as Stephano, Greg Lytle as Leonardo, and Sherry Hodge as Jailer. Setting and properties are by Lee Budahl. Music is by Tom Tyra. Costumes are by Norcostco. Fellowship multiple stress camping adventure April 20, 21,22. All necessary food, transportation and equipment will be provided for $150. Cooking on an old wood stove, fishing for mountain trout, and hiking are some of the activities planned.
