  • PAGE FOUR THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN MONDAY FEBRUARY 25, 1946 CATS HAND APPALACHIAN CRUSHING 45-35 DEFEAT Capacity Crowd Witnesses Clash In College Gym; Rice Leads Cat Scorers Victory Is the First For W. C. Over Rivals In Several Years. Topping the last few minutes of play with six fast field goals, the Catamounts of Western Carolina sent the Appalachian State Teachers to a crushing 45-35 defeat before a capacity crowd in the college gym Saturday, February 9. Jerry Rice paced the Catamount attack with 19 points. Showing his best playing of the current season, Rice split the nets almost at will from anywhere past the free throw line. Al Phillips ran up a total of 13 points for the second high scoring honors. The victory was the first for Western Carolina over Appalachian in several years and in the defeat the Mountaineers didn't give up without a fight. They held the lead through the first half and well into the second. The Cats' first advantage came when Al Phillips shot a field goal with the score 24-23 for Appalachian. The Mountaineers quickly retaliated to regain the lead. A few moments later Ike Olson again put W. C. T. C. in the lead and from then on out it was the Catamounts' game. They rolled up a fast 10-point lead and coasted to victory through the last minutes. Hard work and team play featured the game throughout". Both teams displayed drive, power and spirit. Coach Marion McDonald said that Rice played one of the best individual games that has ever been played on the Cullowhee court. The box score: W.C.T.C. Quint Paced by the excellent floor playing of Ken Rudeen and the sharpshooting of H. Baker, the Morgan Brothers quint of the Asheville City league handed the Catamounts a 42-37 beating in a fast game here February 2. Rudeen, who played for Asheville high last season, proved to be one of the smoothest ball handlers yet to face the hustling Catamounts. Some spectators remarked that he was the backbone of the Candymen's team. He totaled nine points. Al Phillips sank eight points for the losers and Jerry Rice was close on his heels with seven. The Catamounts' starting line-up was Claxton and Rector, forwards; Pryor, center; and Ellis and Jaynes, guards. A recent 26-22 victory over the Gremlins put the Bombers on top of the standings. J. C. Akins, former varsity player, made his first intra-mural showing, pacing the Bombers with 11 points. Mike Ferguson was close behind with 10. The First-floor Morons snapped a losing streak and took three straight games. They handed the Vets two setbacks and beat the Bombers 28-25 for their only defeat. The Vets are trailing the league with no wins and five defeats. The Morons were expected to be weakened by the loss of Mack Fore, but "Goose" Smith may fill his shoes in the lineup. Dennis Franklin of the Bombers is leading the league scorers with 25 points for four games. He sank 14 against the Hobgoblins for the loop record. Mack Fore hit 31 for the Morons before he left school. The standings: Team W L Pet. The Western Carolina Teachers extended their conference wins by edging out the first place Catawba Indians 32-31 in a game that kept 1300 spectators on their toes here February 13. The Indians, trailing by a 32-29 score with 40 seconds to play, hit a long shot to pull up within one point of the Catamounts. Four seconds before the final whistle blew, the ball rolled around on the Catawba goal and fell on the outside. Howard Barnhorst started the Catamounts off with a bang by dribbling through the Catawba players and sinking the first two points of the game. The Indians dropped farther behind as the game progressed and W.C.T.C rolled up a 21-14 halftime lead. The last half saw Catawba gam its first lead, 25-21, by sinking 11 points before Western Carolina scored. With eight minutes left in the game, Tommy Ellis regained the lead for the Catamounts, 28-27, with a field goal from the free- throw line. By excellent man-toman defensive work the Cats managed to hold their lead until the final whistle blew. Coach McDonald used only two substitutes, Ben ny Pryor and Roy Phillips. Barnhorst, Ellis and Olson played the complete game. Catawba lost a game to Appalachian the night before they lost to the local five, but they still retain their lead in the conference because they have a season's total of nine wins against three losses. Western Carolina is standing six to three with only one more conference game to play. Their record for the season so far, including conference and non- conference games, is 11 victories and 6 defeats. The line-up: W.C.T.C. G F TP Olson, f 1 0 2 Rice, f 4 0 8 R. All-Stars Lose To Webster Hi Cagers The Webster high cagers downed the Intra-mural All-Stars 11-7 in the college gym January 26. The All-Stars, minus a few of their best players, could not get on the ball and the game was pretty rough, which accounted for the low score. Bryson of Webster was high man with five points. The line-up: All-Stars (7) Down In Front By Orville Coward The Cats do have a chance to win the Conference. Coach McDonald points out that it is not known for sure whether a tournament will be played. We are all for a tourney, for without one our chances for winning are slim ... It comes to my attention that over a thousand spectators saw the Appalachian game. The road trip was not as successful as we had hoped. High Point, according to the playfers, are not as good as the score showed. Jerry Rice says we just were not beating—"Catawba plainly out- with seven points. The game evened up a two- game series with the Generals. The first time they met, Moore handed the Cats a 43-28 beating, but that was before Olson, Roy Phillips, Rector, Barnhorst and Ellis joined the college squad. Since that time the Catamounts have racked up a number of victories and very few losses. The lineup: W. C- T. C. FG FT PF TP Olson-f 3 1 0 7 R. Phillips-g 3 2 1 8 The Dayton Rubber quint of the WNC cage league fell in a 45-38 defeat at the hands of the Catamounts in an exciting game in the college gym, January 26. Ike Olson gathered the scoring honors for the game by hitting 18 points for the Catamounts; Malcolm Brown and Sam Ardery of Dayton were runners-up with 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Catamounts hit a streak of bad luck on their down state trip February 4, 5 and 6. After winning their first game against Guilford 30-20, Lady Luck turned her back when they played at High Point on the 5th. and they lost to the Panthers 45-26. The next night the conference leading Catawba Indians shaded them 4943. The Cats used their 2-1-2 zone defense to cut off Guilford's close shots and forced them to rely on set shots. Irie Leonard sank six of these for 13 points. Olson and Rice did the damage for W.C.T.C with eight points each. The Panthers handed the Cats their toughest pounding of the season. Embler hit the basket for 14 points, but our shots just wouldn't go in. Catawba had a hard time in gaining their seventh conference win from us. The score was tied seven times during the first half and at halftime the Indians held a bare 25-24 lead. McGinnis of Catawba was high man with 21 points. Jerry Rice paSed the Cats with 15.
