  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday October 26, 1972 page 3 First Of Two Rap Session Covers Wide Variety Of Topics Last night Dr. Carlton and acting vice-chancellor Doug Davis met students in a "rap session" in the lobby of Helder Hall. Probably because the meeting was held in a residence hall rather than In a more "neutral" territory like the University Center, more,than the usual number of questions relating to the problems of dorm life were discussed. Another rap session with the Chancellor and his staff will take place tonight on the 2nd floor of the U.C., beginning at 8:00 pm. Leading the list of complaints about dorm life, particularly life in Helder, were gripes about the unavailability of ironingbo- ards, color televisions that do not work, and closets with missing clothesracks and doors. Most of these types of questions were relegated to the next meeting of Helder Hall residents. On the issue of classes on November 7, Carlton said, "I don't think going to class is go ing to prevent you from voting." He added that all faculty members and administrators would be working on that day and stated that students should have no difficulty finding time to vote between classes. One student voiced displeasure at the fact that there was nowhere that a student may go to study on campus after midnight.' The student, an unidentified woman, said that she had to study before an exam with a male student and was asked to leave the U.C. at 12:00, only to find that there was nowhere to go on campus. She and the male student were forced to study with their books opened and their papers spread on the floor of the Post Office. Carlton said that a facility for late night study was "a good Idea" and that it will be looked into. He stated that he had been unaware that the situation existed, but promised a prompt study of the problem. As usual, many students complained about the fact that they were obligated to buy meal tickets whether or not they used them. One student cited a case of four women on her hall who had been put on special diets by their doctors and who had not used the cafeteria facilities at any time during the quarter. These students, nevertheless were obligated to pay the full price of a meal ticket because they were dormitory residents. Dean Davis replied that allowing students the option of buying or not buying the tickets would increase the per-meal cost of eating in the dininghalls for students who had full meal tickets. The cost of meals, he said, Is calculated with the assumption that students will miss certain meals durlngthe day and on the weekends. If a student were to use his meal ticket for every meal during the quarter, his cost per meal would run about sixty-six cents. Having students pay only for the meals they ate would greatly increase meal costs for those students who ate regularly at the cafeterias. Davis said, though, that substantial numbers of students were unhappy about the existing meal situation and that the possibility of more optional meal plans was being studied. In the meantime, he said, students with special dietary problems should see Mr. Sted- man Mitchell, the Director of Food Services for assistance. Questions regarding crowded classroom facilities were fielded by Dr. Carlton. In the planning stages, he said, was a new building to replace McKee, In which space for English, Music, Foreign Language, and Philosophy and Religion classes will be provided. Next on the order of priorities when he took office, Carlton said, was a new administration building, but he felt now that a second classroom building which would also Include numerous faculty offices was a more pressing need. However, he cautioned, "these things take longer than you or I would like to think." Talk of physical facilities revived long - standing student interest in a pedestrian campus. That, Carlton said, could not be accomplished until new roads, especially the proposed four-lane, could be built to unsnarl traffic around the campus. Carlton stated that numerous physical improvements would have to wait on an overall master plan, to be drawn up by architect Richard Bell of Bell Associates, in the spring. Out-of-state tuition drew numerous complaints, but Dr. Carlton said that the problem was statewide and would depend on legislation from Raleigh. He said that he knew, though, of no plans afoot for increasing the already-high out-of-state fees. He speculated that higher fees for out-of-state students would one day be a thing of the past.
