Spring Festival scheduled for May 11-16 Four Seasons, Iron Butterfly to headline Ticket sales begin Monday THE IRON BUTTERFLY-ONE 0" MAW Complaint filed against WCU for discrimination The Women's Equity Action League has filed a formal complaint against Western Carolina University with the United States Department of Labor. The complaint was filed under executive Order 11246 as am- enied by EKecutive Order 11375, which specifically forbids sex discrimination by Federal Contractors. In a letter dated April 14, Jazz Quartet rescheduled The Modern Jazz Quartet, originally scheduled to appear at Western Carolina University March 4, will appear at ft;13 p.m. Monday, May 4, In Hoey Auditorium. Mexico and the Manhattan School of Music in New York He na- taught theory at the Manhattan School and under his leadership the school adaed to its curriculum a jazz training program, The program will include several of Lewis" compositions, including "Today," new theme of NBC-TV -Today" Show, and also recorded by Beatle-owned Apple records-. Other members of the 15-year-old quartet are Milt Jackson, vibraharp; Percy Heath, bass; and Connie Kay, drums. The program ic open to WCU students without charge and to the public at a nominal foe. 1970 to George P. Shultz, Secretary, Department of Labor, Dr. Bernice Sandler, Chairman, Action Committee on Federal Contract Compliance in Edi- cation, WEAL, requested "an immediate review" of WCU's employment policies. Dr. Sandler stated that the Department of Labor "ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment without regard to ■ . . sex." Dr. Sandler enclosed a ' 'job- order" to be used by applicants interested in a clinical psychologist position in the Psychology Department here. She stated that is "discriminatory against women in that one of the qualifications is male . . . The restriction ... to males only is clearly a violation of the Executive Order." Dr. Sandler also requested "'an imnediate investigation not only of the specificsof thiscom- plaint, but into all hiring, promotion, and salary policies." Dr. Eugene McDowell, Psychology Department head at WCU, was unaware of WEAL's formal complaint. "It must be a typographical error," Dr. McDiwo.ll said, "I have no idea how it happened. Dr, McDowell stated that the Psychology Department has "no sex or race discrimination" in its hiring policy. The department regularly runs advertise ments in the Am Tican Psycho - logical Association Employment Bulletin, none of which show any evidence of discrimination against either sex. Dr. Alex S. Pow, President of WCU. stated that "Western Carolina University has no policy of discrimination in em ployment on the basis of sex." Dr. Pow went on to say that "there are conditions within the University which would demand employment of a male or a female for a particular position. Whether or not these conditions prevailed In this instance we have not yet determined. '' Dr. Pow further stated that "we have received no direct communication from Dr. Sandier, the Women's Equity Action League or the U. S. Department of Labor. Residence h up dates re Director of Housing The University Center Board and SPEC Committee will sponsor a Spring Rock Festival during May Week, Monday through Saturday, May 11-16. A blanket concern featuring THE FOUR SEASONS will begin the Festival. The concert in Reid Gymnasium will beheld Monday, May II, at 8 p.m. On Tuesday, May 12, free movies will be shown In Hoey Auditorium from 10:00 p.m. until around 1:00 a.m. These movies will be starring W.C. Fields, Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin, The Three Stooges, The Little Rascals, Road Runner, Speedle Gonzales, and others. There will be a dance in Reid Gymnasium on Wednesday, May 13, from 8:00 p.m. until 12:00 p.m. featuring THE GEORGIA PROPHETS, The University Center Board will sponsor a Talent Show In the Grandroom of the University Center beginning at 8:00 p.m, on Thursday, May I4th. On Friday, May 15th, there will be a street dance in the parking lot between the University Center and the new Business Building. This dance will feature THE COLD RUSH and will be held from 9:00 until 1:00 a.m, The highlight of May Week will come on Saturday, May 16th with a Rock Festival in the WCU Memorial Stadium unless bad weather forces the Festival into the Reid Gymnasium. Based on student classification, Fall Quarter, 1970, room Association for professors elects officers for year The local chapter of the American Association of University Professors has announced the following officers, elected April 9: President, Ed Nelson, who served as President-Elect last year; President Elect, Julian Hirt; Secretary-Treasurer, Roger Blsson, who will serve a two-year term. Also elected to the Executive Committee were: Ron Nelson, Lewis Sutton, and Merlin Berry, assignments will be made as follows: Freshmen - Moore, Buchanan, Madison; Sophomores - Reynolds, Robertson; Juniors and Seniors - Albright- Benton. Registration will be held on the first floor of Hinds University Center between 8:30 and 4:30 on the following dates: April 30-May 1. All male students that are living in the correct residence hall listed above, who wish to retain the same room for next Fall Quarter must register on the above date. All male students that must move should register on May 4-5, Each student must sign up in person. No room selection may be made by another student. Those students not planning to live in the residence hall next year should cancel room reservation deposits at the Housing , Office by May 1, for full refund. sions for the Festival will be sold by Panhellenlc Council. The headliner of the Rock Festival is THE IRON BUTTERFLY, Other groups include SMITH, ALL YOU CAN EAT, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, THE TIP TOPS, AND THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE, The Festival will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A dance featuring the TIP TOPS will be held In Reid Gymnasium on the same night beginning at 8:00. Tickets for May Week will go on sale Monday, May 4th in the University Center. The price is $5 for WCU students. This will include activities for the entire week. If a student wishes to purchase tickets for each function separately the cost will be as follows: $2 for the Four Seasons; $1 per dance (which amounts to $3); and $5 for the Rock Festival. This comes to a total of $10. The purchase of a package ticket will save $5. All students are urged to buy advance tickets. Tickets will go on sale to CONTINUED Page 3. . . . New summer readmission policy stated Any undergraduate student, who has met the original admission requirements, who has been academically suspended and not yet readmitted, and who desires to attend the Summer Quarter at Western Carolina University may do so according to the following two conditions': 1. Submit an application for readmission to the university. 2. Register for and carry at least 12 quarter hours of work during the ten-week Summer Quarter. Any student who satisfies conditions 1 and 2 above and who also earns at least a 2.3 q.p,r. on the hours carried fat least 12) will be considered a continuing student of the university. Furthermore, any student who statisfies conditions 1 and 2 above and who satisfies the academic retention policy of the university wHl be considered a continuing student of the University.
