Bouncing Souls, Ben Folds Help Concert Season By Jeff Atkins Staff Writer The summer concert series at Western Carolina is now over and gone. All shows for the fall and winter are going to be at the clubs, which means you have to go outside of Cullowhee. So, after culling through endless amounts of information and bookings, I have come up with the two most interesting shows that are coming to the area in the next couple of weeks. Coming to Atlanta's The Masquerade on Sunday, Nov. 18, are punk rock favorites the Bouncing Souls. The Bouncing Souls are dedicated to the art of living and living to them is punk rock. Not the smelly toilet stall, heroin addicted punk rock, but the punk rock which is a celebration of youth and individuality. Never having burdened themselves with the hang-ups of having to fit a specific mold, it seems only natural that the Souls latest release, "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," would not only represent some of the band's hardest material but their catchiest as well. Their new album incorporates the usual high-octane punk rock punch, tempered with the bands amazing wit and song craft savvy. Ben Folds, the piano-wielding front man of Ben Folds Five fame, is set to play the infamous 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia on Thursday, Nov. 29. Folds is touring in support of his first solo project following the demise of his former band, the Chapel Hill-based Ben Folds Five. Ben's new album, "Rockin' the Suburbs," contains many of the same style of songs Ben offered up on Ben Folds Five recordings, only on this album, they emerge more mature and poetic. The satire and anger Ben brandished on earlier albums, in songs like "Song for the Dump," have been turned inward to create brilliant masterpieces like "Still Fighting It." Ben's ever-present character sketch songs are prolific and brilliant. Songs like "Annie Waits" and "Zak and Sara" constitute most of the album while Ben's poignant humor is still there in songs like the title track that cracks on Quiet Riot and Michael Jackson. Ben jokes about being white, middle class, and yes again, white, but he does it in a funnier and more beautiful way than anyone else could even think about pulling off. Tickets are on sale now for $17. Playing in Asheville soon are two terribly talented local bands. The first is Life's Ruin, a metal group that has been a crowd favorite around Asheville for a while. Life's Ruin will play the Asheville Music Zone on Nov. 17. The other band is Mini-Void. They aren't really metal, they aren't really punk; they are like 311 on speed. They are playing the Asheville Music Zone on Friday, Nov. 17. Both shows are sure to be great. Remember to support your local music scene — no matter how scarce it may be!
