  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN CAT TRACKS % 0 Gary Tyler Intramural Report First Buchanan Third Reynolds By WAT HOPKINS 1st Buchanan 22 3rd Reynolds North 6 The final home football game of the season Is upon us, faas, and from the standpoint qt an avid school-spirited fan, it's prime time for all students to attend the game and really put themselves into backing the team. Our Cats have actually been quite a surprise for the opposition this year, especially Emory & Henry. The 2-1 conference standing that the team now holds Is respectful enough to rate them as a threat for a first place tie In the conference. Now If soneone will only trip up Lenoir-Rhyne. The Saturday night game will give Western backers a chance to see a couple of school records broken. Don Dalton, perhaps the most Improved quarterback in the Carolinas Conference, will be out to toss at least two touchdown passes to tie the previous season record of 12. Dalton has hit a respectful 45 percent of his passes— 69 of 153—for a net yardage of 878 yards and an average of 146.3 yards per game. Let's hope those Catamount ends and backs have glue on their fingers so they can drag in some of those TD bombs. David Lomax, hard charging fullback, is now only 80 yards short of the 639 yard rushing record he set last year. David has been averaging 106.5 yards per game so far this year, and the record certainly looks in reach. The Saturday night game with Elon will be the last home game for four Western Carolina seniors. These men are Joe Love, a 215 pound end from Sanford's FOOD TOGO Picnic Boxes GOLDEN BROWN Chicken & Shrimp Phone "Yo" Orders 586-4096 OPEN DAILY 11:00 A.M. OPEN SUNDAY 12 NOON int. Mill A Main Streets Sylva; Sandy Davis, a 185 pound end from Charlotte; Keith Elliott, a bruising 198 pound guard from Brevard; and fullback Lomax, who halls from Thomasville, Jimmy Corley, Western's kicking specialist has been doing a fine job this year. Jim has kicked 18 of 21 extra point attempts, plus a field goal, making him second in individual scoring. Great job by a fine player, right fans? Right! These men have played excellent football for WCU In their college careers and should be given full support in their last home game. Let's give it to them Saturday night! Another athletic team certainly needs a great deal of praise. This is our fine crosscountry team which has run away from all competition. Led by fleet Terry Helms and Ned Jones, the squad has gone undefeated against all competition. An earlier Cat Tradks told of Coach Heath Whittle's smile in hopes of a good season, well, friends, right now I'll bet he is all smiles! As for the school spirit situation, it seems to have picked up a great deal, especially, of course, at this year's homecoming. However, it seems that the many freshman could still make themselves more evident. Come on, freshmen, lend the team your cheers (Sorry Mr. Shakespeare)! You upper classmen have been making a pretty good noise (hie), but let's see If we can't blast Elon out of the stadium Staurday night! Third Reynolds South made a single score in the first half of the second game Tuesday, but It was enough for the victory. They defeated the Day Students 6-0. The scoring pass was a 15- yarder from Rick Bennett to Dean Barrier. Third Moore North got a safety and a second-half TD, to edge by the Freshmen Day jStu- dents 8-7, Wednesday. The Day Students scored in the first half when James Mc= Elroy passed eight yards to Randy Rodden. Andy McRorle kicked the point after. The Day Students were caught in the end-zone once, though, and David Thomas picked off a Day Student pass and returned it 40 yards to win the game for Moore. It was a winning day for Moore Dorm, because 2nd Moore South whipped 3rd Robertson 12-6 in the second game Wednesday. Gary Rhodes passed for both of Moore's touchdowns. He completed one to Jerry Wagoner for 15 yards and one to Eugene Goodlett for seven yards. Thursday, October 31, 1968 Harriers Favored In NAIA District Cross Country Meet At Mars Hill On Nov. 9, Western Carolina University's Cross Country team will travel to Mars Hill College for one of their most important cross country meets. This is the date and setting for the NAIA District Meet. Thus far this season Coach Heath Whittle's Harriers have enioyed an undefeated season. They put three men across the finish line ahead of Appalachian who has provided the toughest competition to date. If the WCU Harriers win this NAIA District Meet at Mars Hill, they will be allowed to attend the NAIA National Championship Meet to be held In Kansas City. Prospects for this trip look bright when one considers that the Cats will be facing the same competition that they have already beaten once this season. According to past records of performances it is a cinch that WCU will walk off with at least first, second, and third place at the District Meet. As for the Nationals, who knows? With the calibre of runners that Western has this year, a National Championship is not out of the question. THE CAT'S DEN PIPING HOT FROM THE OVEN!! Nothing's quite as tempting as an expertly prepared Combo Cat Pizza from the now world famous CAT'S DEN. Just as Mama's (Mrs. Laws) expression proves, it's almost Impossible to ignore the tantalizing aroma of the best pizza this side of Tilley Creek. And that's not all. Sub sandwiches never had it so good — not until the Cat's Den introduced them to the students of WCU. Don't forget; pizzas and subs are now available by just calling 293-2213 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
