Wind howled around the cabin making the old logs moan as they shifted their weight and found a new position not more comfortable or compatable or in any way better , only different Even so, night came as a relief from an unspeakable day. The last rays of a dying sun had illustrated the north ridge with a pack of wolves. Wolves starved to the point of facing anything but the slow torturous agonizing hunger of death. The wolves hadn't even howled as they took their places on the frozen slope. Their red gleaming eyes told all. Inside , the cabin showed no charm to its occupant, no warmth or comfort. The fire in its fireplace burned grudgingly and threatened with every flicker to pass from existence. Things were bad. Very very bad. The one-eyed Frenchman , stirred from his drowse by the cold, pushed more wood Into his hateful fire and settled back to stare into its sputtering flame. "The worst Is over," he Bu 6. £, Swartsstein thought, muttering through his scraggly tobacco crusted beard, "over and done." Four years, four long years after the revolution they still hunted him; they had even done him out of one eye and for that he stayed awake to curse them consciously rather than murder them in his dreams. Here in the north country he was alive if only just and now even that last fleeting spark was about to be gouged out of his soul by too many miles and too little sleep and the seeping frigid doom of the north. Oh but back a ways. Before., before the revolution, in happier times he had danced and sung and drunk with the rest Danced 'till he could no longer stand, then collapse with some wench pouring more and more wine into him. He had fought too- taking a monstrous toll mostly in material goods, bridges, dams, large buildings but many many a man went too. He was no longer tired. Or even sick. He could not mind the wolves on the ridge; the night had blurred them from his depthless vision and as far as he cared they no longer were there. But might as well unlatch the door, they don't deserve the favor but,..c'est la vie. Rouse yourself. Go over to the door and lift the latch. Pick up the lid of the chest and take out the only possession you have left , symbol of your being. Wrap yourself in this with the maple leaf in the front so you can see.„ha,ha,ha,ha,ha, ha.ha. Sit back down and... Wait The Time Is Short — The CHOICE is not between reality and illusion. The CHOICE is between realities. The CHOICE is between candidates who are on the ballot, not between those who are not. JACK and ROBERT KENNEDY are dead. EUGENE MCCARTHY is not a nominee. HUBERT HUMPHREY is. So is RICHARD NIXON. So is GEORGE WALLACE. The CHOICE for President of the United States is only among HUMPHREY and NIXON and WALLACE. The CHOICE for Vice President of the United States is only among MUSKIE and AGNEW and LEMAY. We are getting down to the nitty-gritty. The time is short. The CHOICE between the realities is urgent. The CHOICE is clear. Start working now and vote for HUMPHREY and MUSKIE - the ONLY candidates with a clear, clean, record of accomplishment for ALL the people. N. C.Young Citizens forHumphrey-Muskie
