  • Bud sponsoring WCU basketball The radio broadcasts of WCU basketball games during the 1978-79 season are being sponsored by Budweiser of Asheville, area distributor of Budweiser and other Anheuser-Busch beers. The sponsorship of Western Carolina basketball broadcasts is part of a comprehensive program of sponsorship of more than 70 colleges and university basketball teams during the '78-'79 season as well as collegiate baseball, hockey and wrestling. "Local sponsorship of Western Carolina basketball broadcasts gives us much closer, stronger involvement with the fans who support the Catamounts and connect Budweiser with their team," commented Charles B. Fruit, Anheuser-Busch beer brands media coordinator. "Our involvement with the WCU basketball program is especially gratifying because rising operating costs have made it increasingly difficult to field competitive teams, and every dollar of income an athletic department receives helps ease the pressure," said Fruit. "We're backing Catamount basketball all the way this season, and we're particularly proud to have America's favorite beer, Budweiser, on the team," Fruit said. Everything you always wanted to... Gardening, writing poetry, and Chinese cooking will be the subjects of three short courses beginning later this month at Western. Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Clark of Tuckasegee Valley Nursery will be the instructors for the gardening course, which will meet Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning January 22 in Room 118 of Forsyth Building. The course will answer questions about shrubs, ornaments, evergreens, perennials, annuals, roses and more. The fee will be $15, and the course will continue for six sessions. The six-week poetry-writing course will meet Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in room 118 of Forsyth building, starting January 23. Kathryn Stripling Byer, winner of the prestigious Anne Sexton Poetry Prize, will lead the workshop. Mrs. Byer has published in "The Hudson Review," "The Iowa Review," and "The American Scholar," and currently serves as an editor for "The Arts Journal" in Asheville. Fee for the workshop will be $29. Chinese cooking will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on seven consecutive Thursdays beginning January 25 in Room 409 of Belk Building. The instructor, Peter Chu of Asheville, will teach participants how to prepare a variety of Chinese dishes. The $45 fee for the cooking course includes all materials and supplies. All three courses are sponsored by the WCU Division of Continuing Education, telephone 227-7397. Police chief is school bound The Asheville chief of police is going back to school this spring, but he won't have to take any exams or write any papers. Police Chief Melvin Tucker will be the instructor for a WCU evening course on the law enforcement process. Classes will meet Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the UNC-A campus. The course, Criminal Justice 310, is a required "core" course in WCU's criminal justice degree program. It deals with the philosophical, historical and operational aspects of law enforcement agencies, their administration and organization. Tucker became Asheville's chief of police last January after serving more than three years as chief of police in Hickory. He is a former chief of police and director of public safety for the city of Morristown, Kentucky, and has been a special agent with the FBI. Tucker holds the bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and the master's degree from Appalachian State University. He has taught law enforcement technology at Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tenn.
