S. armed forces anywhere in the world on or after June 27, 1950, the start of the Korean conflict, and who were discharged or separated under conditions other than dishonorable, may be entitled to VA hospitalization under the following priority system: First, those needing hospitalization because of injuries or diseases incurred or aggravated in line of duty in active service since June 27, 1950. Second, those in need of treatment for nonservice - connected disabilities who state under oath they are financially unable to pay hospital charges elsewhere. These* veterans must wait until a bed becomes available. For purposes of hospitalization veterans with service on or after June 27, 1950, who develop an active psychosis (mental illness) within two years from the date of their separation from active service are deemed to have incur red the disability in active service and fall under the first priority ANN HAMPTON AWARDED CAP BEREA, Ky. — Miss Elizabeth Ann Hampton, daughter of G. T. Hampton of Cullowhee, was awarded her "cap" after completing the first six month training period at the Berea College School of Nursing recently. Miss Florence Gibson, head of the Nursing School, and Miss Martha Wylie, instructor in the school, presided at the capping exercise Dean of the college, Louis Smith, was the principal speaker. Receiving the "cap" is a milestone in the career of a student nurse at Berea. It marks the completion of the six month training period during which time class work and ward experience have been sufficient for each candidate to decide whether or not she wishes to continue in the course, and for the faculty of the School of Nursing to observe the student and judge her fitness for the profession. Miss Hampton was one of 24 freshmen nurses successfully meeting the standards, and she has been highly recommended for further training in the School of Nursing. EXAMINATION ANNOUNCED An examination for Meteorological Aid has been announced by the U. S. Civil Service Commission for filling positions principally in the United States Weather Bureau, Department of Commerce. The salaries are $2,950 to $3,410 a year. To qualify, competitors must pass a written test and, in addition, must have had had appropriate education or experience. Full information regarding the requirements, and instructions on applying, may be obtained at many post offices throughout the country, and from the U. S. Civil Service Commission, Washington 25, D. C. Applications will be accepted until further notice; however, interested persons are urged to apply at once. BATON TWIRLER . . . Demonstrating form which won her' title of "Miss Majorette of America" is Janice Wadsworth of Florida's University of Miami. Cash receipts from farm marketings in North Carolina in 1953 totaled $884,070,000, or 6 per cent below those of a year earlier. Demand for farm products remains strong even though a gradual decline in economic activity is continuing. United States farmers will plant about 1,041,000 acres of flue-cured tobacco this year, nearly 2 per cent above the 1953 acreage. College Juniors And Seniors May Begin A Navy Career Now The door is now open for college juniors as well as college graduates to enter a stimulating, well-paying profession. A new WAVE officer training program will be conducted at Newport, R. I., commencing in June. Applications for this class must be sub group above. Patients requiring emergency medical treatment may be taken directly to the nearest VA hospital; but, if possible, the veteran, or someone acting for the veteran, should communicate with VA by telephone or telegraph beforehand. In all other cases, the veteran, his nearest relative or his guardian or representative should fill in the proper form for hospital care. These forms are available at any VA office. If admission to a hospital has been approved for treatment of a service connected disability, Government transportation may be provided to the hospital and, upon completion of treatment, to his or her home. This service may be provided for treatment of a non- service connected disability if applicants state under oath they are financially unable to pay for the transportation. Librarians Needed In Federal Service The United States Civil Service Commission announces that there is still a need for librarians in various Federal agencies in Washington, D. C, and vicinity for positions paying entrance salaries of $3,410 a year. Applicants are required to take a written test and must have completed (a) a full 4-year college course which included at least 30 semester hours of study in library science; or (b) 4 years of progressive experience in library work; or (c) 1 full year of professional library training in a library school mitted prior to May 10. Selected college graduates will undergo eight weeks of basic training and indoctrination. Upon the successful completion of this training period, those selected will be commissioned ensign, USNR and will then enter the officer training course for an additional eight weeks instruction. College juniors will take the basic training course at the end o' their junior year, but will not be commissioned or go into advanced training until after graduation.
