  • Page 8 Senate, Plus Tickets Equal Hot Discussion The Student Senate met Monday, February 5 and a heated discussion took place over unpaid faculty tickets. The Health and Safety Committee reported Uiat at their last meeting a motion was brought to Uie floor to abolish all unpaid faculty and student tickets and to start over with strict enforcement The motion was tabled until the next meeting. The Senate members stated that Uiis would create a problem because many unpaid faculty tickets dated back 2 years. One Senator also declared Uiat Uiis would be doing a grave injustice to Uiose students and faculty members who have paid for their traffic tickets. Finally, Uie Senate agreed Uiat Uie problem of unpaid faculty tickets was the result of the loosely written regulations in the "Student Handbook* concerning these tickets. According to Uie Senate, Uie matter will be dealt with immediately following Uie publication of Uie New Student Handbook. Other business at the meeting included Uie reports of Uie various Senate Committees. The cafeteria committee reported Uiat a day student meal ticket has been approved. The meal ticket will cost $35 per quarter but will be good for lunch on weekdays only. A Million Dex! (ACP) - Amillion^dex! That's right: o-n»e m-i-1-l-i-o-n d-e-x. That, said the DAILY TAR HILL, is enough to get Uie entire University of North Carolina student body through exams, with enough left over to scatter knee-deep over Polk Place so exam-punchy students could scamper through them barefoot, It's kind of an Alice- in-Amphetamineland dream. But dreams get smashed. And so do doors. Like the ones that South Carolina lawmeri bulled through at a Cowpens, S.C., truck stop to find 45 containers full of Benzedrine, Dexedrine, and other pep pills. A million of them, the cops said. Needless to say, that's one million dex that won't be peddled to anyone this exam period, The library committee reported Uiat the book check has been successful thus far in the prevention of "book* thefts. However, magazines and periodicals were reported missing. In other business, Uie Senate approved Uie Constitutions of Uie Rotary Club and the Sigma Tau Sigma Fraternity. Trustees Allow Dorm Drinking (ACP) — The Board of Trustees, Bucknell University, Le- wisburg, Pa., has approved a change in regulations which would, in effect, permit students to drink in their dormitory rooms. The rule will go into effect when procedures for implementation and enforcement are worked out. The Bucknellian commended Uie Trustees for their action: First, we congratulate Uie Trustees on Uiis sign of their faith in our common sense and maturity. We have urged Uiis step for some time, in keeping with other evidences of a more liberal attitude toward students. Second we urge students to prove the Board's action was appropriate. The change was clearly intended to expand Uie realm in which students might make private decisions regarding their private lives. It is an abandonment, in part, of the "in loco parentis" doc- tring of dictating to us how we should conduct our private affairs. Regardless of what procedures are set up to endorce the rule, each student must remember he is still a member of a community, keeping in mind Uiat even private actions could — in a dormitory — prove disturbing to others. Webelieve Uiat when Uie new rule goes into effect, it will be self- enforcing. Hopefully, this is only one more — not Uie last =- in the direction of recognizing student maturity. As the University's apron strings grow looser, we have Uie opportunity to prove they are unnecessary. THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Contest Sponsored By Writers Raleigh . . . The first writing contest sponsored by the Tar Heel Writers Roundtable has been announced by Roundtable Director Bernadette Hoyle. Categories are short story, article, juvenUe fiction, and poetry. All entries must be unpublished and deadline for submissions is June 15, 1968. First place winners in each category will receive a beautiful trophy, second and third place winners will receive certifi cates. The awards are being given by Uie Sir Walter Hotel, Raleigh, N. C. where Uie Round- table is held annually, and will be called Uie Sir Walter Hotel Writing Awards. 'Liverpool Scene* Gives Peanuts View Of Life The Liverpool Scene1 (Dou- bleday Paperback, Jan. 5) edited by Edward Lucie-Smith is dedicated "To Uie Beatles without whom &c." It might more specifically have been dedicated to John Lennon's "In His Own Write" or "A Spaniard in the Works." Wacky whimsy characterizes some of the young poets Included in this volume. A digestible seriousness, others. It's all good reading, and it's illustrated. As one of Uie generation to whom The Liverpool Scene is addressed put it: "It is laden with good things: an out-of-the-ordinary, dish-ran- away-with-the-spoon world, a Peanuts view of life, Christopher Batman Robin, puns, definitions, happenings, shades of e. e. cummings and Dylan Thomas, Uie relating of creative experience. It's funny; it hurts." Thursday, February 8,1968 SUDS»WZ£A 633 MERRIMON AVENUE 1501 PATTON AVEf ASHEVILLE, N. C. The draft commands compliance to its rules without telling everyone concerned what all Uiose rules are. It is entitled to compliance but not through ignorance of Uiose affected. We discovered how little is known about Uie draft law and how difficult it is to find any information and decided something had to be done. We have spent months researching Uie law and have found a lot of facts that are not generally known outside Uie Selective Service Headquarters. 1. Many persons are not even required to register for Uie draft. 2. If you are not required to register and volunteer, you will be registered without being told you do not have to register. 3. Few persons have seen Uie draft law. 4. The government does not give out copies of Uie law to the public. Miss Sillwell To Compete For 'Dixie' Contest Miss Jeannie Stillwell of Glenville a student at WCU has been asked to compete in Uie annual "Miss Dixie" contest held each summer in Day- tona Beach, Fla. She was notified by Phil Shaw of Day- tona News, Inc., Uiat she had been chosen as a contestant As a contestant, her sponsor, Daytona News, Inc., would provide an expense-paid trip to and from Daytona, and also a wardrobe. "Miss Dixie" is chosen from contestants who come from every part of the South. Pageant festivities last for a week with each contestant competing in swim suit, evening gown and talent, She is also heavily judged on personality and poise. Miss Stillwell is Uie daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Stillwell, Sr., of Glenville. She was Miss Jackson County in 1965; at Western Carolina University she is Miss Day Student 1967, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity Sweetheart and second runner-up for Miss Catamount Pageant, Water Polo . . . From Page 7. in the second game, Day Students won again as they put down Pi Kappa Phi 12-6. It was a tie game 4-4 going into the half. However, Day Students pulled ahead in Uie second period of play. Don Brown was top man for Uie Day Students with 6 points. Richard Smith, Larry Long and Tiny Rollins were scorers for Pi Kappa Phi. 5. A ''Glassblower" is a "critical occupation" subject to deferment, there are dozens of other "critical occupations." 6. There are two "services" which fulfill your military obligation besides Uie Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Uie Air Force. 7. If you are scheduled for induction there are many postponements available. 8. It is possible to appeal classifications to the President. 9. There are 22 other classifications available besides "I A". 10. The American CouncU On Education says: "Enrollment in Uie first two years of graduate and professional schools next fall will be limited to women, veterans, men physically disqualified and Uiose over the age of 25." 11. Beginning in July, 1968, almost 75% of all men inducted by Selective Service will be college graduates. Don't be drafted unnecessarily! Get expert information on the facts about, the draft law. We provice a free service for students who send a brief resume of facts pertinent to Uieir classification, this clipping from your newspaper, and a self-addressed, stampted envelope: The Committee for Informed Young Americans Friendship Station Box 5568 Washington, D.
