XXXIII, NO. 27 Thursday, February 1, 1968 CULLOWHEE, N.C. At New Center Boo/cSe/ecf/onTo Improve A Carolinian News Analysis By DAVID WATSON When Uie A.K. Hinds University Center opens during Spring Quarter the students of WCU will find a new and, hopefully, better equipped book store. The University Book Store will be similar to the one located in the old Student Union Building. According to Mr, H„P„ McCarroll, manager oftheUni- versify Book Store, the new store will be self-service in a departmental manner, McCarroll says Uiat Uie book department improvement will be stressed. The store will get about two-thirds of its books from the required book list and basic reading list for college students. Included in Uiis are Monarch study guides keyed to Uie text of the books at the WCU Book Exchange. Added to this will be the Monarch guides to literature. "We will enlarge our basic reading books, we will have a better class of books and more of them," stated McCarroll. He believes that the purpose of Uie store is mainly to furnish helpful paperboundbooksforthe students. About one-third of the books are to be fiction (of what quality we can only guess). McCarroll said that in Uie past there have been complaints about the time it takes for books to be received when ordered. According to him, it takes two to three weeks from Uie date ordered for books to be received. If there is a rush, Uie book store will phone in Uie order and have it shipped United Parcel. But Uiis is an added expense to the store so Uiey don't like to do it very often, however, if necessary they will do it, McCarroll stated, "If the faculty would order books in time, it would help a great deal." Many times professors wait until Uie beginning of Uie quarter to order, then complain when their students can't buy their books for two or three weeks, "There is nothing we could do to rush up these orders," said McCarroll, "but on the whole, the faculty is most cooperative." Contrary to rumors, there is no mark-up in price on paperback books, according to McCarroll. The book store charges Uie price listed on Uie book on the invoice. In addition to an improved book store, the new University Book Store will have an expanded sportswear department, greeting card selection and a greater line of accessories. The store now has a franchise with Revlon cosmetics. They will increase Uie line of comestics and toilettries as demanded by the students. McCarroll closed by saying, "We are there to serve Uie students." 5 -j I ■jSjTw I'M "^ IT'S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP New Dorm Construction Causes Multiple Problems The possibility Uiat the new nine-story high rise dormitory will be completed by Sept 18 is slim, according to admin istrative officials who talked with The Carolinian Tuesday, If the dormitory is not completed, a multiplicity of problems will result for administrators, faculty members, and students, according to Dr. W, LTC Presents One-Acts A bill of four ambitious one- acts will be presented by Uie Little Theatre at Cullowhee, Friday, Feb. 2 at 8:00 p.m, The plays, directed by students of JosephlnaNiggll's D.A. 112b class, represent four of the most accomplished authors of the modern drama -- Shaw, Synge, Albee and Inge. An exercise in humor for the author of "Pygmalion," "St Joan" and "How She Lied..." features a love triangle which, regardless of Uie play's age, appears alarmingly modern. Kim Stores, Vernon Smith and Allen Harrill are the cast of this play. is perhaps the most famous one-act in modern drama and will be directed by Susan Magness from Hendersonville. Students appearing in Uiis tragedy in which an elderly woman loses all her sons to Uie sea include Elizaoeth Bundy, Buddy Davis, Genii Jennings and Caroline Batson, Newton Turner, vice president for academic ;iffairs, "Right now it looks as if the new dorm will not be completed, I doubt it will be completed by Christmas," Not completing Uie dorm by- Sept, 18 will not only keep student enrollment down, but also faculty enrollment, Tyree Kiser, director of admissions, has been authorized to accept students in anticipation of the completion of the dorm, From 2500 applications received thus far, 1400 have been fully acceptable, that is, they have metall requirements of Uie institution. Of Uiese 1400 ap plications, 1109 were accepted to attend the University. "More applications are coming in every day," Kiser stated. Yet if Uie dorm is not finished, students will have to be denied admission. Even Uiough this is a women's residence, the Housing Committee cannot deny just girls, Both men and women will have to be denied, and tHs will be on the basis of the dale of application. "Our faculty enrollment," explained Turner, "is based on full time enrollment of students which is estimated two years in advance, CONTINUED Page 8 ,,,.,.. .
