Randolph St., Chicago 603-608 Standard DIdg., Atlanta, Ga. Please send me information on a trip to leaving about lasting weeks. Name Address treux to Chateau d'Oex during May and June. The festival of the narcissi in Mon- treux in June is one of the country's famous flower fetes. The charming thing about summering in Switzerland is the versatility of things to do. There are few places in the world so wonderful for people who like to walk. The beauty of the mountains, the surprises of the winding roads, reward the pedestrian's slow pace. In three weeks you can walk from one end to the other of the whole country. And you may participate in many snow walks through wonderful ice scenery without ever doing any real mountain climbing. If, however, you are ambitious to become a mountain climber, the country offers you easy rock peaks on which to practice until you gain the skill and strength to tackle the Matterhorn. For the angler, Switzerland is a paradise. For those who need competitive sports there are golf, tennis and in certain sections of the mountains "winter sports" that many enjoy in July. If you wish to come back from your vacation with a sound body and a wholesome spirit, choose Switzerland. Dwellers of the Silences Rarely is there issued such a vivid, dramatic and accurate set of Nature stories as is included in Dwellers of the Silences, by Alexander Sprunt, Jr. Rarely, too, has the reading public been offered such a clear, sharp-etched picture of the real out-of- doors, where death is the penalty of carelessness and the prospect of serving as a meal the most likely one offered to the individual animal or bird by a stern Nature. Mr. Sprunt, curator of ornithology at the Charleston, S. C, Museum, does not make the mistake of so many Nature writers, and give his characters—Cygnus the Swan, Ursus the Bear, Wide-Wing the Eagle— human attributes; but he has so carefully studied them that he is able to create real personalities, whose joys, tragedies, triumphs and failures demand response from the reader. It is as if Mr. Sprunt had travelled from the land of blizzards to the tropics with his creatures, had seen them in every turn of their lives, and had reported their experiences with objectivity and lack of sentimentality. There is little plot in the stories, but much of action. There is little attempt at fine writing, but actually a fine, limpid, colorful style is achieved. Mr. Sprunt, we hope, will be sufficiently encouraged by the results of this, his first book, to prepare another in the near future. The illustrations of this remarkable volume are by Charles Livingston Bull, concerning which nothing further need be said. They are fit complements to the excellent stories. Dwellers of the Silences is published by Dodd, Mead and Company at $2.50. Florida Garden Exhibit The wide-awake Garden Club of St. Petersburg, Florida, held its annual Garden Exhibit during February before large crowds, in which were numbers of tourists who took back home with them an idea of the progressive activities of this organization. The aim of the group is home and city beautification, and the program of the exhibit tended to illustrate the effective use which could be made of native plants. 284 Mention Nature Magazine when answering advertisements

Several articles on the Carolinas appear in this 1931 issue of Nature Magazine. The magazine was collected by George Masa. Born Masahara Iizuka and raised in Japan, George Masa (1881-1933) emigrated to the U.S. when he was 20 years old and, in 1915, came to Asheville, where he lived the rest of his life. Masa was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
