  • 7 Western Carolinian/November 17,1983 WCU Climbs To 13th In NCAA Polls Western Carolina moved up five places to 13th place this week in the latest NCAA Division 1-AA Football Poll. The Catamounts appeared in the poll for the first time this season two weeks ago in the 20th position. Last week, they moved up two spots to 18th. The last I-AA poll will be conducted after this Saturday's games and the remaining spots in the NCAA's 1-AA playoff will be filled. The NCAA announced Monday that Holy Cross and Southern Illinois have been selected as the two independent qualifiers. In addition, three conference champions were determined over the weekend and received automatic bids. They were Boston University of the Yankee Conference, Nevada-Reno of the Big Sky. and lastern Kentucky ofthe Ohio Valley. The Southern Conference champion (either WCU or Furman) and the Southland Conference champion (either Northeast Louisiana or North Texas State) will receive automatic bids. The remaining five berths will be tilled Sunday afternoon from the conference runnerups. independents and other at-large teams. The playoff will start November 26 on four campus sites with the top four seeded teams receiving first-round byes. The championship process will take tour weekends to complete with the championship game scheduled for December 17 in Charleston, South Carolina at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium. Photo By Mark Haskett Reggie Perry of Sylva-Webster High School scores on this seven-yard run in the third quarter en route to a 31-8 victory over Fred T. Foard in first-round playoff action last Friday night. The Golden Eagles, who finished their regular season with a perfect 10-0 record and are currently ranked second in the state 2-A polls, travel to Newton-Conover this Friday. 1983 WESTERN CAROLINA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM - WCU's women's volleyball will go after the conference volleyball crown this weekend. The Lady Cats will come into this weekend's Southern Conference women's volleyball tournament riding on an 11-match winning streak and seeded first in the live-team tournament. Western, the runner-up in the tournament last year, brings a 27-8 overall record to Johnson City, TN - the site of the 1983 championship. Western concluded its regular season last Wednesday at East Tennessee State and came away with a 15-11, 15-4, 15-12 three-game win at ETSU's Madison Brooks Gym, the site of the conference finals. Western has not lost a match since an October 15 defeat at Georgia. The Lady Cats are 7-0 against Southern Conference foes and 6-1 against Atlantic Coast Conference teams. WCU is seeded first in the tournament with East Tennessee (2), UT-Chattanooga (3), Appalachian State (4) and Furman (5). Western gets a first round bye. Simply put, they come into the tournament as the team to beat. "The goal we set at the beginning ofthe year was to win the Southern Conference championship," second year head coach Trish Howell said. "Even though we are defeated in matches with our league teams, we are not the league champions unless we win the tournament. We are preparing ourselves for a tough tournament." Appalachian State and Furman open the tournament action Friday (November 18) with a 7 pm best of five game match. East Tennessee and UT-C play at 10 am Saturday morning, will play the winner of the ASU-Furman match. The championship match (a best of five games match) will begin at 3 pm. The winner in that match claims the league's grand prize. The conference tournament looms important for no other reason than it is for the "brass ring." Unfortunately, the league does not have an automatic bid to any NCAA Division I regionals, so by all probability the season will conclude with the league championship. The Lady Cats have never won a women's Southern Conference championship, but finished second in volleyball last year. Western finished the 1982 season with a 33-12 record and have won 136 of 176 matches in the last four years. The kind of year we're having in our fall sports makes me proud to tell people 1 attend Western Carolina University. I was talking to an old friend back home who is an avid "Carolina" fan, and he mentioned that "hey, IVe been hearing a lot about Western's football team on TV." Another prominent sports writer recently remarked that WCU's volleyball team was beating all the ACC schools. Darn right! I'm proud! ...We're not yet in the TOP 10, but we're on our way! Last week's 43-7 romp of Gardner-Webb, (who, by the way, almost defeated ASU earlier this season) impressed enough of the nation to move us up FIVE NOTCHES in the NCAA Division I-AA poll to 13TH. If we kill Appalachian this week, look for us to move up even more! Then, post-season play will look very likely, but let's not look ahead — the matter at hand is the BOONE GOONS... ...Coach BOB WATERS and staff say this weekend's matchup with ASU reminds them greatly ofthe 1978 season. That year, WCU was in position to win the Southern Conference Championship, and Appalachian knocked the Cats out of contention with a 39-14 upset win. This year, if ASU can win, they would again, ruin any chances the Cats have of post-season play. Sounds like REVENGE is in order for this game!... ...The Catamounts' streak of eight games without a loss is the longest for a Bob Waters team since 1974, and a victory over APPY STATE would tie the 1983 Cats with the 74 and '69 teams for the longest non-losing streak. The '74 team lost its opener and won nine in a row, and the '69 squad won its first nine before losing... ...THE CATS are also currently the THIRD HOTTEST team in the NCAA's I-AA ranks with eight games without a loss. Only Holy Cross and Furman have longer streaks. Holy Cross has not lost in 10 outings this season, while the Paladins have not lost in nine games since opening with a loss at South Carolina State... ...With scores like 44-17 and 43-7, WCU is now averaging 31 POINTS A GAME over the last seven weeks. Isn't it fun to see the Western side of the scoreboard light up so brightly?!... ...ATTENDANCE has yet to reach its potential for football this year, but our winning season has seen an increase in Catamount fans. Ticket Manager JO ANN CANIPE reports that attendance at Whitmire Stadium is up 13% over last season. The 1982 Catamounts played before 44,647 • at home for five games, while this season, 49,129 have already attended for the same number of games. With a SELL-OUT expected this weekend, look for this to be a record year for Attendance at WCU... ...APPY STATE holds a tremendous advantage in the football series with WCU, (32-14- 11), but since Bob Waters began coaching the Cats in 1969, WCU has won 9 and lost 5-Make that 10 and 5 after this week!... ...Cat wide receiver ERIC RASHEED'S 61 CATCHES this season ranks as the third most for a receiver at WCU in a season. Only Wayne Tolleson (73 in 1977) and Gerald Harp (62 in 1978) rank higher. His 101 career catches ranks him seventh on WCU's all-time list... ...Quarterback JEFF GILBERTS 13 TD PASSES this season rank him FIFTH best on WCU's season list, and his 154 COMPLETIONS are the third most for a Catamount quarterback in a season. Gilbert's two running touchdowns last week against Gardner-Webb marked the FIRST TIME A WCU quarterback has scored twice in a game on the ground since Ken Morgan did it back in the 1960's. Remember now, this is the same JEFF GILBERT that had never started in a college football game until this season!... ...Defensively, TIGER GREENE'S six interceptions this season is the most since Willie See BITS, Page 8 Q "O "O Q Q O zr Q' DJ/s AND UNIVERSITY LAUNDRY MOONLIGHT MADNESS SALE Thursday Nite 6:00—Till Thursday Nite All Haircuts $6.00 Storewide Specials ALL Nite a Beat the Boone Goones! appalachianWESTERNappalachianWESTERNappalachianWESTERNappalachianWESTERN I Good only 11-17-83 j ALL CIGS 650 I At Univ.
