Leonard Kephart to Laura Kephart, December 21, 1939

In this letter of December 21, 1939, Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) writes his mother, Laura Kephart to thank her for the family history she sent. He mentions that Buddy and his daughter Barbara have been painting the house all summer and that he sees his daughter Jane and her husband Ralph on Sundays. He thinks his mother-in-law may move out and would be well-suited to living in a home for Catholic ladies, and if she does move out he proposes that she come live with them for the winter.

December 21, 1939 Dear Mama, The books of family history came safely the other day and I opened them at once instead of waiting till Christmas because I thought I heard something gurgle or otherwise give off the sounds of Perishables. However I was not at all disapointed [sic] because I find that history of all kinds gets more and more interesting as I grow older and I look foreward [sic] to going through the books. I must confess that my notions of my family tree are extremely hazy. Cornelia was always quite adept at that but I was merely bored. I can appreciate, now, my own children’s lack of interest in such things and will just bide the time when the ‘present’ is relatively less important to them. Its getting to be a lot of fun having them grow up, though it has its bad aspects too of course. Things have been very quiet at 226 since the hectic days last June. Buddy and Barbara worked all summer painting the house and it now looks fairly presentable, on the out
