Please send to Leonard & he to Winnebago Indian Agency Cornelia Winnebago, Neb. Jan. 2, 1935. Dear Mama, This is a double thank you for the children’s things and for my card from you. They were welcome indeed, you may be sure. Things have moved at such top speed out here that there actually hasn’t been time for better writing. Just now I’m somewhat settled for a few days. The “camp superintendent” for this agency was sent elsewhere and the man who was to replace him is in a hospital up in N. Dakota. So I’m filling the shoes temporarily. Actually, we run no camp, for the men all live at home but there are a little million of jobs under way that must be watched. My regular job is mighty interesting. We, from the Minneapolis office, supervise the work at twelve Indian Agencies in Minnesota, Wisconsin, a bit of Michigan (Saulte Ste Marie) and parts of the two Dakotas, Nebraska and Iowa. (mostly various tribes of the Chippewa & Sioux) It is farther from the “soo” in Michigan to Turtle Mt. in N. Dakota than it is from New York to Chicago. And from the northern to the southern limit of our territory must be as far as from New York down to around Norfolk somewhere. With only two of us working out of Minneapolis this means a lot of auto travel. Most of that being after 5:00 PM and before 8:00 A.M.

In this letter of January 2, 1935, George Kephart (1894-1961) writes to his mother, Laura Kephart from Winnebego, Nebraska while working as a Forest Engineer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He describes long days of driving as his office covers Minnesota, Wisconsin, Saulte Ste Marie in Michigan, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. He explains that $100,000 a month is being spent of conservation work and that his boss, Mr. Heritage is leaving him in charge for six weeks. George Kephart’s home base is Minneapolis where his wife and two children are living happily. He asks for the letter to be sent along to Leonard and Cornelia so a short note from Barbara Kephart Bird (1897-1985) to Leonard is included.
