  • Visalia, California December 28, 1918. Mr. Horace Kephart, Bryson City, H. C. My dear Mr. Kephart:- I have your favor of the 19th. nist. acknowledging receipt of photos of my little collection of firearme. You are certainly welcome to use the photos at any time and in any way, and I will take pleasure in making plates of any individual or groups that you may indicate. The only derringer of interest is the Remington .22 with "push-down" hammer in lower left corner of one of the boards. These I understand were quite the thing with northern officers during the Rebellion, being easily concealed, I suppose, if captured and I know that many of the western gamblers carried tham in vest pockets or palm of hand. On the board with the dragoon pistols and Savage revolver, the second from the right at the top is so strange that I made a drawing and wrote it up for Outdoor Life some years (3?) back. It has no name or number and is interesting on account of the excellence of the brass or gun-metal casting of frame and handle and for its novel lock which consists of only the mainspring and combined hammer and trigger. The handle is broken, the break showing plainly in the photo, which shows the gun fully cocked. On the same board with the Remington derringer and just below center of the card is the Wesson & |,eavitt which I also wrote of and pictured in Outdoor Life. Just below this and to the right is an old Prescott, probably the rarest piece that I have. I am still on the lookout for pieces of interest, particularly American made, but the are becoming hard to find. I have not been able to get the Colt »49 Navy model and they used to be more common here than any other pistol. Flint and percussion rifles are also unattainable in this vicinity, tho I have made less search for shoulder guns than for pocket and belt pieces. I cannot imagine how they disappear from the face of
