  • In this letter of October 15, 1864, J. H. Woody writes Thomas Franklin regarding the death of his son G. W. Franklin.
  • Camp Fishers Hill Va Oct the 15th 1864 Mr. Thomas Franklin Dear sir I hasten to write you a few lines in which I am sorrow to give you the sad nuse of the death of your son G. W Franklin Who was wounded on the 25th of Aug and left at Leetown about 12 miles north west of Harpers Ferry he was left in the enemys lines and we have not & we have not been permitted to see him since that time but a man who was left there as a nurs Came out a few dayes since & gave us the nuse of his death he said that he lived about two weeks after he was wounded I suppose that the man was not mistaken he was left there to take care of the wounded & certainly knew Elihue Chambers who was left there to take care of G.W was sent [past the frontlines of war] I don’t know particulars of his death now the date but will write you as soon as I can ascertain G. W. Was a good soldier and conducted his self as such & had the best wishes of the whole command. we regret his loss very much but such are the misfortunes of war as I have nothing of interest to write I will close yours most Obediently J.H. Woody
