  • In a letter of April 13, 1862, Wiley Paris writes to his wife Jane describing camp conditions near Kinston, NC. he also expresses his desire to be home again where he can once again enjoy good food.
  • State of NC Lenoir County kinston April the 13 1862 dear wife it is with pleasur that I take the presant opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you now that I am well at this time hoping thes lines will find you in good health I hant any thing strang to rite at this time more then I want to sse you verry bad we hant had any fite yet and I don’t think we will have we are stationed 5 miles from kinston and has got Chimneys to our tents and is doing tolerabel well though it does look like that old ransom will drill us to death all the Connection is well only ________ [?, crease in page ] he has had a pain in his head but is giting beter mee and Alfred boath has bin Sick but has got well a gin the last leter I got was when the Campt Com I am lookng for a leter every day though I now that you Cant take time to rite often nor I don’t want you to try to rite verry often for I Cant rite much my Self for I am out of paper and in vellops and Stamps I only have a nuf to rite one more leter I got a leter from m montieth and Cant anser him for want of paper thar is Chance for us to git off tel our time is out I don’t think but forty seven days will soon run Run off and then our time will be out when you rite tel mee how you are giting a long with your work and how your stock looks and I want you to have mee a good mess of eggs aginst I Com home for I have lived on bread and meet tel I am tired of hit and I want a good Jug of whiskey with som Cherry tree bark in hit for I now I will need som thar has bin a talk of keeping us in longer than our time but I don’t think that will be don tha made us send all of our things to golds boro that we Could do with out for we all thoght that we would have a fite when we first Com her and we may have yet be for we leve her the yankes in thirty miles of us it is not worth my while to try to tel you how bad I want to See you for I Could not if I was to rite all day So I will Close for the presant I Still remain your affectonate husband tel death M W Parris to Jane Parris
