[] Pap that I sent a canteen full of gunpowder home by Sam Harrill out of the 16th Regt. He said that he would carry it to his brothers Alphard Harrill and leave it thare. The canteen was full of powder it had about three parsals in it. This is half of the powder that belongs to Levi Kenedy, John Kenedy, his son has wrote to him to go to our house and get his share of it. Tell pap to go to Alphard Harrills and get it. If Sam hant brought it to Alphards you can get it at Harmen his fathers. Let Kenedy have half of it.

In this letter of March 21, 1863, G. J. Huntley writes his father, (William Lawrence Huntley, 1821-1899 ), from Camp Gregg near Guiney Station, Virginia. He wants news from home and states that “camps make me feel bad.” He is confused about the war after talking with Holden. He also wants to make sure that the gunpowder he sent home reaches home. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
