purged and cleansed it is not going to cease. You have no idea of the wickedness that is in camps. I don't think that I would be going too far if I was to say that there is some Regiments in camps close to ourn that the men will curse, swear, and play cards all night in a tent where there is a corpse. The death of a man here is nothing more than the death of a hog, or at any rate not much more. The pride and wickedness of our nation has brought it to its present, condition and what is to be the end of it I am unable to tell. My intention is to go ahead and fight as near for what is right as I can. If it is my lot to fall and fill a soldiers grave I shall not be by myself. Tears has flowed free since the commencement of this war and doubtless many more will flow. Some times I become very much depressed in spirits, then again hope revives me up and points me to something bright in the future. If it was not for hope I could not live. It will continue to cheer my drooping spirits till I am laid under the sod. I would like to see you all once more but it is uncertain whether I get home this summer or not and the prospect is fair for my body to be left in Old Virginia. But I hope if we meet no more on earth that we may meet in a better place where wars shall cease and peace shall reign. One desire I have, and that is that you give

In this letter of May 4, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes friends from his location in Caroline County, Virginia. He states, “When the Yankies agrees to give us our just rights then I will be willing to ground my musket and go back into the union and never before.” He also asks that the children back home get a good intellectual and moral education. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
