  • w e m Carolinian In Brief March 17, 1999 Volume 63, Issue 13 fummmf v#iC Food Critic Debuts page 6 page 8-9 Lady Cats page 11 Four Students Charged In Separate Acts Of Vandalism by Jeffrey Sykes Contributing Writer In separate acts just before spring break, walls, mirrors, doors, and stairwells fell victim to the markers and spray paint cans of four students charged with inflicting "injury to real property" according to documents on file with the Jackson County Clerk. Joseph Patrick McCarthy Jr., 20, of Havelock, N.C., was charged, along with another stu dent whose identification could not be confirmed, in the first incident which occurred in Leatherwood Dorm in the early morning hours of March 2. Residents awoke to find dozens of phrases written in marker upon nearly every door, mirror and wall in the building. The act stemmed from disciplinary action against one of the two men, and was directed towards Head Resident Bryan Dodge. The vandals wrote "F—K Dodge" over and over, and combined this with slogans of "Fight Oppression", "Abuse of Power" and "Watch your back Dodge". In the second act, Christian Michael Burnett, 18, of Greensboro and Dwight Bowman Gray, 19, of Cullowhee, were charged with spray painting "Mail Service Sucks" and "Mail Service is Run by Ni—rs" in the stairwell of Walker Dorm. Both slogans were painted over immediately. Burnett is no longer enrolled here at West- Photo by T.K. Roberts The Old Ritz Theater, longtime landmark of downtown Sylva, has finally come down as part of the beautification project for Main Street. Built in the 1930s, the Ritz Theater area will now be used as a parking lot, according to Jim Bosworth of Sylva Partners in Renewal, and could hold up to 40 parking spaces. The finish date for the lot has not yet been set. The four were charged with injury to real property, a misdemeanor under North Carolina law. One of the students has been banned from campus housing for two years, and two of the students have Student Hearings pending. "Normally in cases of vandalism to residence halls, suspension from residence halls is a likely outcome, but the facts in each case determine the sanction," said Dr. William K. Haggard, associate vice- chancellor for Student Affairs. "If we find the violation is racially motivated, the person will receive a more severe sanction." Last semester there were 17 cases of vandalism in university housing, up from 12 for the 1997/ 98 academic year. It is a violation of the Code of Student Conduct to vandalize school property, and the increase last semester may reflect a better job by staff of identifying the culprits. "Vandalism on campus is sub- stantial," said Billy Norton, WCU's Director of Housing. " Just a few cause real problems for everyone. If we could take the time and money we spend dealing with vandalism, we could have more money to do positive things in the residence halls." Gene McAbee, Director of WCU Public Safety, commented on the case in Walker. "We do take it serious," McAbee commented. "Not only because of vandalism, but because these things hurt people, whether it is a hate crime or not." WCU Offers On-Line Registration by Don Costello Managing Editor In keeping up with the title of "Most Wired Small Town in North Carolina," WCU will begin offering on-line class registration later this month for the summer and fall terms. The new process will mean that students will no longer have to wait in seemingly endless lines in order to get their classes. Students will be able to access the registration through Western Carolina's homepage and Western's Information Network (WIN), where students can currently access their grades and financial aid information. After meeting with an advisor, each student will be given a PIN number different from the access PIN in order to access registration on the "Registration Menu." This PIN will be used for registration purposes only. After selecting a term, you will then need to type in the new call numbers that appear in the left column of the Schedule of Classes bulletin, instead of the actual class number. For example, English 101, section 60, in the summer term will be identified by call number 10031. Once you register, a final confirmation of classes will be displayed on the screen designating see 'On-line Registration' page 2 >
