to send me the neat measure of her foot with a stocking on I haven't been to town since I got your letter and can't tell anything about the price of the hat if I can get to go to Nashville before Wright starts I will get you that apron Martha there is only one chance for me to get out of the army if father or somebody else will see the Sheriff of Monroe County and get him to appoint me as deputy sheriff I can get a discharge but if you undertake it be verry (sic) carefull (sic) and don't let everry (sic) boddy (sic) know it Martha you say you want me to pay no attention to my comerades (sic) I can inform you that my comerades (sic) has a good deal of respect for me

The events of this undated letter written by Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) to his wife, Martha suggest that it was written in spring of 1864. H. M. informs his wife that he has sent some things with John Wright for her and the children. He tells her that if someone “goes to see the Sherriff of Monroe County and get him to appoint me as deputy sheriff I can get a discharge,” but she must not let anyone know. He tells her that his comrades respect him and anyone else trying to be a Christian, but they do not tolerate anyone who does not act like a Christian. He asks her to write every week and to burn the letter as soon as she reads it.
