General Delivery Port Chicago, Cal. October 31st 1945 Dear Sam, I got your letter today and oh, it was so good have a whole letter from you. I was disapionted and hurt for not getting to see you when you were only 30 miles away. I had been looking forward to meeting you, even when you got off the ship, for weeks. When I would think of your coming home, I couldn’t sleep, or eat or work. We had the red cross looking out for you and everything but I guess they kinda slipped up that time. I was kinda mad with mama for not wiring me but bless her heart she does the best she can.

A letter from Mrs. W. L. Young to Samuel Owens about everyday life. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
