Nashville Tenn April 11th/64 My Dear Wife again I embrace the present opportunity of addressing you as I have a chance of sending a letter by Jack Hill and nothing affords me any pleasure only conversing with you By letter and if I could only see you and converse with you face to face I think I would Be one of the happyest creatures on Earth But as God has otherwise ordered it I feel inclined to subm-mit to his will hopeing that the time will soon come when we will be permitted to see each other again and enjoy the sweets of our first love and of home in peace and if we meet no more on Earth may we meet in heaven

In this letter of April 11, 1864, Henry Marshall Misemer (1832-1865) writes his "Dear wife," Martha Misemer, from Nashville, Tennessee. He says they have moved about eight miles north and he think it is to avoid the smallpox outbreak occurring in Nashville. He reports he is in good health but that his "first Major" died from the disease. He discusses the possibility of furlough and why they are not likely to get it. He lets her know that he sent her money, but it came back to him and he will send more along with the things that she requested and lets her know he will help pay for her to hire help. He relays that he received a letter from Wm B. Misemer in McMinn County, Tennessee who is on the Confederate side of the war. He also lets her know that no one opens his letters unless he will not be there for awhile so that they can be answered.
