I can inform you that I was at the 16 Regiment day before yesterday. They was in camps within a mile and a half of us. I saw all the Rutherford boys that has been from home so long. They was all well then but there is no doubt but what the case is different with them this morning for they was in the fight yesterday certain. I want you to write oftener. It has been a month since I got a letter from home. When you write tell me how your wheat is. I thought I would get to come home at harvest and help save the wheat but there is no chance of it. Save all you can. I can inform you that I have not seen Wm. Jones for some time. He was sent to the hospital sick from Fredericksburg and I don't know where he is nor how he is. There is no chance of connection helping each other here. When one gives out or dies they just lay him aside and pass on. They brought over a thousand sick from Ashland hospital the other night on the cars to Richmond and could not get house room for them that night and t

In this letter of May 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends about his journey to Spotsylvania County, Virginia where his camp is now within sight of the Yankies. There are skirmishes every day between the pickets, but no regular engagement yet. His camp is ready to leave on five-minutes notice, but he doesn’t know where they will go. He speaks about the camp conditions and says that he saw his cousin George Wilkie about two miles away in another Regiment. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
