that can be found in the South. The best military men that you have up there know nothing at all about drilling. You can't draw any idea about how our troops drills. South Carolina and Georgia troops drills much better than we do. Tell Pap he spoke of him and Hamilton making good music. You can tell him that he never heard any good music in his life. We have two Brass Bands of music that plays here. One in a Georgia Regiment, the other in a South Carolina Regiment. If you could hear them play you might talk of good music. There is nothing that would be as interesting to you as being here and seeing us drill and hearing the bands of music. But though it is so much interesting, if times was settled, I had much rather be at home this morning a planting corn, for it is the nicest morning that we have had yet. The Fifth NC Regiment is in half mile of us. I have seen the Hethrow boys they are fat and hearty. The sickness in our Regiment is on the decline at this time. We lost Wilkie King out of our company a few days back. I want you to write soon and give me all the news and tell how you are getting along starting a crop and how the wheat looks. I can inform you that our Colonel has left us. He has been elected Colonel of a Regiment of Regulars.

In this letter of April 3, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his friends in care of his sister Tincy Huntley from his location near Goldsboro, NC. He talks about camp life and how many troops are in the area. He hopes to get home to harvest and cut wheat “if I should live that long.” This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
