all the children a good education, not only intellectually but morally, for it is far better than gold or silver. I can say to you that all men between the age of eighteen and 35 is in fer the war they get a bounty of 50 dollars. I have some idea of going to Capt. Eaves Company at Raleigh, except I get somebody to take my place. If I could get some one that was over 35 to take my place here, I would go to Asheville in NC. Frank Shehan is in this company and wants his father to come and join the company. Tell him if he will come and take my place I will pay him something extra. Frank may write a few lines to send to his father in this letter, but I don’t know for certain whether he will or not. Nearly all my nearest friends in this company will leave it and go home the 16 of July and I don't much like to stay here then. I have a strong notion of going to the 50th Regiment at Raleigh to Capt. Eaves Company. I cannot tell for certain what I shall do. I want you to stay at home as long as you can and make truck and take care of the rest. Some time ago I wrote home for more clothing, but I have written several letters that you never got, I don't expect. I will tell you what I want now. You may send me one shirt and one pair drawers and pair socks and some Black Powders. That's all I want now. I may want some pants some time this summer, but I don't know what time. I will let you know. Write soon and excuse bad writing for I have been hurried as we have to go out on a review in a few minutes. Write soon and give me all the news. G. J. Huntley

In this letter of May 4, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes friends from his location in Caroline County, Virginia. He states, “When the Yankies agrees to give us our just rights then I will be willing to ground my musket and go back into the union and never before.” He also asks that the children back home get a good intellectual and moral education. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
