pickets. There is a rumor in our camp today that our troops has burned Yorktown and fell back from that place, but I don't put much confidence in the report. It appeared from the way that you wrote that you was getting very out of heart about our gaining the day. I can inform you that my faith in our course is as strong as ever and ever will be till the Yankies offers us an honorable compromise. When the Yankies offers to give us our just rights and liberties and agrees to let us alone then I will ground my musket. But as long as they declare that our property shall pay the expenses of this war I will fight them as long as I can crawl, so long as they exact our property to pay the expenses of the war they never can subjugate us. They may take every seaport town round the whole Southern Confederacy, they may entirely overrun Virginia and then we are not half whipped. We will fight them as long as there is a man or have our just rights and liberties. For I had as live die as become a subject. I am sick and tired of this war and camp life, but I had as live be on the battlefield as to go home and be an undertow. When the Yankies agrees to give us our just rights then I will be willing to ground my musket and go back into the union and never before. I think this was intended as a scourge upon America for so much wickedness and until our country is thoroughly

In this letter of May 4, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes friends from his location in Caroline County, Virginia. He states, “When the Yankies agrees to give us our just rights then I will be willing to ground my musket and go back into the union and never before.” He also asks that the children back home get a good intellectual and moral education. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
