  • purged and cleansed it is not going to cease. You have no idea of the wickedness that is in camps. I don't think that I would be going too far if I was to say that there is some Regiments in camps close to ourn that the men will curse, swear, and play cards all night in a tent where there is a corpse. The death of a man here is nothing more than the death of a hog, or at any rate not much more. The pride and wickedness of our nation has brought it to its present, condition and what is to be the end of it I am unable to tell. My intention is to go ahead and fight as near for what is right as I can. If it is my lot to fall and fill a soldiers grave I shall not be by myself. Tears has flowed free since the commencement of this war and doubtless many more will flow. Some times I become very much depressed in spirits, then again hope revives me up and points me to something bright in the future. If it was not for hope I could not live. It will continue to cheer my drooping spirits till I am laid under the sod. I would like to see you all once more but it is uncertain whether I get home this summer or not and the prospect is fair for my body to be left in Old Virginia. But I hope if we meet no more on earth that we may meet in a better place where wars shall cease and peace shall reign. One desire I have, and that is that you give
