If it should be my lot to fall in battle I hope you will all take it easy remembering that what must come will come. It is a dark time now. The dark clouds of war appear to be thickening. Grim devastations and degredations appear to be our lot. Oh, once happy America, what is to be thy lot? Are we consigned to the fate of unhappy Poland? May Heaven smile upon us once more. Yet, it is nothing but what is right. But if disappointment fill thy cup. You must nobly drink it up. I never expect to despair. Cousin George Wilkie was here yesterday. He is well and says for you to tell his folks to write to him. I am of the opinion that the people of Rutherford has for gotten the soldiers, as we never get any letters. I could write a week, but I must quit. Write soon. G. J. Huntley

In this letter of June 10, 1863, G. J. Huntley writes his sister Tincy Huntley from the line of battle near Fredericksburg, Virginia. He details the events around him and shares his thoughts on the war, and on death. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
