Feb. the 10,1862 Goldsboro Wayn County, NC Dear friends and relatives, I seat myself this evening at a late hour for it is about one hour after dark to drop you a few lines to inform you of my present situation. I am in good health at this time and I hope these lines will find you all in the same condition. If I had the time tonight I could right you a good deal of news but my time is short. The whole Regiment is all in a bussell preparing to leave here. The right wing of the Regiment is going to leave about midnight. The left wing of the Regiment will leave early in the morning. They have been fighting three days on the coast. The Yankies has taken Roanoke Island and whipped our forces there. They taken about three thousand of our men prisoners besides arms and other things in abundance. There was about one hundred of our men killed according to the report. We do not know the loss of the Yankies. We are going to Roanoke River about where the Yankies is in order to keep them from comin

In this letter of February 10, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes to his friends and relatives from his location in Goldsborough, NC because his regiment is getting ready to leave for the Roanoke River in order to keep the Yankies from coming up the river. He is also requesting letters from home and medicine. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
