and you must do [cut out] bonds with it or change [cut out] been struck this year and [cut out] first of August for after that time the government wont give bonds for it and after that time the money wont be worth nothing. You can look at the date of my money, but I am fully certain that it was all dated before the first of this year. Maybe that my bounty that I send home from Raleigh was of the last date. I will cut a piece out of a newspaper and send it to you that will give you some information about it. You must attend to it. If you can get money of the last date it will all do. Colonel McDowel is still in this company as a private and sends you his best respects. I han't nothing more to write now that is interesting. We are looking for Griffen this evening. If he comes, I will send an old pair of pants home by him, if he comes this evening I will send this letter by him. I sent a canteen of gunpowder home by Sam Harrill. He was to leave it at Alphards. You can go and get it. Half of the powder belongs to Levi Kennedy. His son in this company has written to him to go to our house and get his share of it. You can give him half. Do the best you can and keep out of the war without fail. Rice Roberson is back in camp. Send me something to eat when you can and as often as you can. Lieutenant G. J. Huntley No pains in writing.

In this letter of June 15, 1863, Lieutenant G. J. Huntley writes his father (William Lawrence Huntley, 1821-1899 ) from camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia to let him know the Yankies have retreated and his Regiment will be moving on. He wants to make sure his father knows to trade his money dated before last December in for bonds or it will no longer be worth anything. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
