June the 20th, 1862 Camp near Richmond, Va. Dear Father I seat myself to write you a few lines to inform you of my present condition. I am well at this time and hope my lines will come safe to hand and find you all well. I have nothing that is very interesting to write to you at this time. Only that the Yankies and our men is throwing bombshells right here close to camp as thick as hops, and it may end towards evening in a general engagement. And I don't care narry draw when it commences, for I had nearly as live die as live, the hotter the war the sooner it is over and I am tired of living this way and I want them to fight. I feel willing to meet them any day. If you have the chance I want you to send me something nourishing to eat for I am worn out on meat and bread. Just send my clothes the first chance you have. There is no certainty in sending them by Old Coot. James Taylor has got a son that went home from Dickerson Company a few days back. He will be coming to camp in two or three weeks. He lives above Rutherford, James Taylor's son. You must write often. Make all you can and save all you make.

In this letter of June 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his father (William Lawrence Huntley, 1821-1899) from his location near Richmond, Virginia. Fighting is very close and a general engagement is certain. Huntley is ready for fighting as he states, “the hotter the war the sooner it is over and I am tired of living this way.” This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
