  • Tell Pap that I want some more Black Powder the first good chance he has to send them and I also want you to send me one good coarse pair of socks as soon as you can and you may take good care of the sheep and your wool for jeans britches is selling here at eleven dollars a pair, that is five dollars and a half apiece or for one pair. I can tell you something now about my summer clothing. I shall want one good coarse shirt, and one pair of summer britches and one pair of drawers. But you need not send these three garments till I write for them for I don't need them now and it may be two months before I need them. I will write when I get to needing them, but you may send me the socks and Black Powders as soon as you can. Don't send the others till I write for them. Tell Pap not to volunteer by no means for there is young men enough to fight yet. Tell Russ to stay at home and take care of his family. I would like to come home and see you all but there is no chance of getting home now. I think I will get to come home about harvest and cut wheat if I should live that long. Write how the Old Man is getting along these times. Tolliver Hughes is still in the hospital, he has got the mumps now.
