We was ordered to charge on the Yankies but their force was so large and them so well fortified that it seemed like it was impossible. The flag bearer of the 34 was wounded and the colors fell, but they were seized by the behind man and hoisted to the breeze and in a few moments he was wounded. The 3 man seized them and in a few moments both his legs was shot off. But not withstanding the deadly fire that we had to undergo, we maintained our ground until we was so much exhausted and nearly out of amunition that we was about giving up when General Iverson's Brigade from Georgia came to our assistance. The fight lasted late in the evening. The Yankies was driven from their stronghold and compelled to give back. I have been in several fights, but it seemed to me that I never witnessed such a time before. There was three ball hit me but none of them broke the skin. A piece of bombshell hit me in the knee and bruised till it turned black. But though we drove the Yankies our loss is very great, more than the Yankies in my opinion. Mitchell Wall, Harrison Wall was both killed and James Wall mortally wounded. I could say much more but it is useless. We are now in our old camp and may before long have to encounter another such a day. This is Sunday and we are on picket. I will close by saying if you feel any interest for my welfare here or hereafter I wish to have your prayers in my behalf. General Jackson, A. P. Hill and Pender was all wounded. Jackson's arm was taken off. Write soon and often. You see my writing. Excuse. George J. Huntley

In this lengthy letter of May 10, 1863, G. J. Huntley writes his father and mother from his location in Camp Gregg near Guiney Station, Virginia detailing the events of a battle on the Rappahannock. Huntley asks for everyone’s prayers. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
