but by the aid of their gunboats they may succeed. I have understood lately that the citizens is moving all the valuable property out of Richmond. I can inform you that I was on picket duty 24 hours since we come to this place. I could see the Yankies tents, hear their drums and bands of music plain. I think this is a beautiful section of country. We have good water at this camp, just as good as there is in old Rutherford. I can inform you that I saw Cousin George Wilkie and John Burnett a few days ago. They are in the 13 South Carolina Regiment and they are in camp about two miles from this place. If we stay here a few days I am going to see them again. George is fat and harty. There is right smart of sickness in our Regiment. On the account of late expresses we hant had any tents since we came to this place. We are in camps in an old piney field and we just surrounded our sleeping place with pine bushes. Our tents has been sent to

In this letter of May 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends about his journey to Spotsylvania County, Virginia where his camp is now within sight of the Yankies. There are skirmishes every day between the pickets, but no regular engagement yet. His camp is ready to leave on five-minutes notice, but he doesn’t know where they will go. He speaks about the camp conditions and says that he saw his cousin George Wilkie about two miles away in another Regiment. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
