Washington 11, D.C August 26, 1945 Dearest Sammies Toaay we heard over radio that another group of prisoners had been liberated from Japan and Oh, God, do let one of them be youl Another report said planes had dropped food and supplies to another camp, perhaps one of them was yours - Still another report and the one big news item here today is the fact that today, which is yesterday in Japan, our fleet is entering Tokyo Bay. We can only hope that we don't have to wait much longer for news of you and in the meantime we'll be trying to bring you up to date as much as possible on events at home. P_at and I are leaving Washington next Friday arid will see mother on the way home - If she hasn't already done so, we are going to try to find out how we can cable you and have it waiting for you when you get to the Philippines. If you don't have a cable, you will know that we were told you would be here before we could reach you in that way. Mary and Charles are at Mamma's this summer and that just siits Mamma and Dad for Dad is perfectly wild over Mary's baby and he is cute as a button. I'm sure each one of the brothers and sisters will want to give you their own version of themselves and introduce their new members to you so I'm trying to hold back as much as I can and not tell you too much about them. There have been so many happenings s■noe you were here or since you have heard from home, I know you will be prepared for disappointments. It wouldn't be life if a family the size of ours could have lived through five years without heartache here and there but there must be ^compensatory*" measures At least we can thankfully say there have been no war casualties except your own experiences, that with you, Frank, Ben, Nell (in the Yfaves), Sunny Billie, Bill Young (Dutchie's husband) and Miller Edwards (Nell's husband) all in uniform for the past three years and some of them from the beginning of the visit, there is cause for thanksgiving and gratitude. Mamma and Dad spent last winter with-me in Statesboro but as soon as the first warm days came they were ready to go home and begin their garden and get settled down at home. Their place really looks pretty now and the money you have sent them and the money they have been getting from, your allottment has kept them comfortably, they have not needed for anything and now that the war is over and you and Frank can come home, it will add years to their lives. I stayed a few days there on my way up to Washington and expect to stay over a few days only, on my way down for Pat will have to be in school by the 6th or 7th of September. She has one more year of High School. Sunny and Billie went up to the University until they volunteered in the Armed Services - Sunny in the Navy Air Corps and Billie in the Army Air. Corps. As I told you the letter I wrote a few days ago, Sunny is here in W&shing- ton stationed in the Navy Research Division. We see him nearly every day, I'll be writing avery day or so until I hear definitely where you are - It does me good to write even if I'm not sure you will get the letters. All my love and here's hoping we'll see you soon.
