Head Quarters, 4th Infantry Cherokee Agency, 3rd, Dec, 1838 (Duplicate.) To Major General Winfield Scott, [illegible] E, Division, U.S. Army. In addition to the papers transmitted I have but little to remark, the [illegible] of the nation has been fully [illegible] for, as well as the honor of the regiment to which I belong –at, and over the graves of our murdered comrades- funeral honors were paid – for twelve days the men of the regiment passed the mountains, crossed the streams and threaded the valleys of the country, in detachment of from two to sixty men, in search of the outlaws, or as hunting parties prepared for battle or for grave.
