  • Where Did All The Food Go? By Whitney Woody * WCnewsmagazine Most students have already heard the rumors about Dodson cafeteria being changed around into a completely new dining facility. Well, the rumors are right. The question is: what are students going to do without the original Dodson cafeteria? Where will they turn to? Most importantly, what do students think about these changes being made to Campus? Many students seek out the C3 stores in order to buy their food, but not to worry. Not only will the new dining hall offer an All You Care To Eat location, it will also offer students retail locations such as Starbucks, McAlisters Deli and Panda Express. Still not good enough? Well, Brown cafeteria, renamed as the Cats Den, will be converted to a retail location with late night hours of operation for all of your meal and snacking needs seven days a week. So, what are the downsides to these changes? Dodson will be the only location to accept block meal plans and, to top it all off, the project is not scheduled to be completed until Fall 2008. Several students, such as Danielle Cox, approve of the changes. I think its good that were upgrading food quality. There will be healthier food options and it will make campus look nicer. However, the regret that Cox shares with many other students is that the new dining facility will not be ready before students graduate or leave for other reasons. We'll go through all the problems of building it but we won't get the benefits. After spending her college years at Western and fully experiencing the food choices, senior Charlotte Hagins agrees with the changes as well. It sounds good to me. There will be more variety and the average college students schedule is based on late night feedings because it is really the only free time we have, so these late night hours of operation will be perfect. During their stay at Western, students like Hagins spend more money on buying food off campus at fast food locations such as Taco Bell or Wendys to get away from the dull tastes of school food. The new variety that WCU is presenting in its food selection is a welcome change that should appeal to new students as well as continuing students. Students should feel at home at WCU and enjoy what they eat. The allure of WCU is that it has a home away from home sort of atmosphere, insists Hagins. Despite the advantages that will accompany the new dining hall, there are still concerns about the project. Many students feel that although the final product may be a good thing for the university in the end, the construction that students are forced to deal with takes away from the appeal. Upon seeing the mess of construction on campus during various orientations, several prospective students made the decision not to attend WCU based on their first impressions of the campus. However, students must make their own decisions and determine whether the good outweighs the bad. Ultimately, you can't everybody, Charlotte Hagins declares. please S fe
