  • THE GREAT FOREST: AN APPALACHIAN STORY CULLOWHEE-Author and lecturer Wilma Dykeman will be the featured speaker Thursday, Sept. 12, as the exhibition "The Great Forest: An Appalachian Story" begins a four-month stay in Western Carolina University's Mountain Heritage Center. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Mountain Heritage Center, with a reception to follow. Both are free and open to the public. The forest exhibition, which traces the cultural meanings of the Appalachian forest, will be on display at WCU through Jan. 23, 1986. It was created through the Appalachian Consortium through a grant from the National Endowmentfor the Humanities. Sam Gray, former exhibit coordinator at the Mountain Heritage Center, helped plan and design the exhibit and wrote and produced the accompanying slide-tape program. Several WCU faculty also worked on the project including Anne Rogers, Curtis Wood and Tyler Blethen. The theme of the exhibit is the relationship between man and the forest and the search for balance. There are four sections in the exhibit that portray the prehistoric forest, the forest during the settlement period, industrial use of the forest, and the forest as it is today. Dykeman, a native of Asheville, describes herself as having "spent a lifetime of listening to old- timers, absorbing the rhythms and patterns of their speech, observing their ways and daily appreciating the natural magnificence which surrounds human existence." She is the author of "The French Broad River," "The Tall Woman," "Look To This Day" and "Black Nor White," which she co-authored with her husband. Dykeman has won the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Award, the Hillman Award and the Mary Mildred Sullivan Medallion. WRITING WORKSHOP OFFERED CULLOWHEE-Dr. Stephen Tchudi, a well-known authority on writing, will conduct workshops on Writing in Content Areas at Western Carolina University, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. Hand 12. "Writing can be a way to think and learn in science, history, math, art or any subject area, not just in English classes," Eleanor Lofquist, director of special programs in the WCU School of Education and Psychology, said. "New methods utilizing writing throughout the curriculum are producing positive results from primary grades through college," she said. The workshops, led by Tchudi, will provide university general education faculty, education majors, and public school teachers and administrators with pertinent information about current research, methods of using written composition, and practical development of writing lessons in a variety of subject areas, according to Lofquist. Tchudi is director of English education at Michigan State University. He was the editor of "English Journal" from 1973 through 1980 and is the author of "The English Teacher's Handbook," "ABCs ofLiteracy,""Young Writers Handbook," "Teaching Writing in the Content Areas" series, and several other books for teachers. His visit to WCU is sponsored by the WCU Visiting Scholars Program and the departments of elementary education and English. Tchudi's Wednesday (Sept. 11) session will be held in the auditorium of WCU's Music- English Building and his Thursday (Sept. 12) session will be in Room 104 of Killian Building. Both are scheduled from 9 a.m. until noon. The workshops are free and are open to the public.
