Internships Now Available In "Resources" Summer Program Twenty-five internships are available for students in the Department of Natural and Economic Resources' Summer In- tern Program. Applicants must have com- pleted two years of college or technical training to qualify for White To Lecture Tonight In Stillwell 336 George F, White, Jr., a visiting scientist from the Rey~ nolds Metals Co. in Richmond will lecture tonight in Stillwell 336 at 7:30. The topic will be food and drug regulation of packaging. White is sponsored by the Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society and the chemistry department. Refreshments will be served after the lecture and students will have the opportunity to discuss the role of the industrial scientist with White. the internships. This is the program's third year. It is designed to supplement student classroom work with practical experience, while providing the department with assistance in problem solving, according to Dr, Arthur Cooper, Assistant Secretary of the Department of Natural and Economic Resources. Most of the internship programs are located in the Raleigh area, with some scattered across the State. The students usually work for 12 consecutive weeks between May 6 and August 30, Among the projects to be covered are Land use planning, computerized inventory of state air quality and fuels, and geological properties of New Hanover County. Deadline for application is March 15, Track Team Fares Well In Last Indoor Meet Getting in some last minute preparation for spring's outdoor season, the Western Carolina University track team fared well last week in the Tennessee All-Comers Indoor Track Meet. WCU was part of an impressive field which included squads from the U. of Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama State, E. Tennessee, West Georgia and others. Western track coach Paul Jones was full of praise for the efforts of Randy Helderman, who turned in a very fine time of 4:22 in the indoor mile. Two WCU freshmen, Rick Gehle and Joe Richi, also finished well in the mile run with times of 4:33 and 4:32, respectively. The mile relay team, com- Cats Win by Hank,Komodowski posed of John Arnold, LeVon Wilson, Craig Goodspeed and Randy Layman, combined for a time of 3:30 finishing behind Alabama State and Georgia Tech. Several big names headline the schedule with meets scheduled against N. C. State, Furman, the University of Georgia, and with trips to the prestigious Dogwood and Quantico Relays. Catamount Mike Phloe'stime of 7.9 seconds in the 60-yard high hurdles was only one-tenth of a second off the school record. Buddy Paterson placed well for the Cats in the 1000-yard run. Last week's meet was the final indoor event of the season for Coach Jones' squad before the regular season gets underway the first week of spring quarter. Weightlifting Tonight Intramural action on the WCU campus shifts from basketball to weights this evening as the campus bench press competition gets underway al 7:00 In the weight room i of Heid Gym- nasium. Weigh-ins for those involved in the competition will take place until 3:00 this afternoon. Also coming up on the schedule is the intramural wrestling tournament which will be held March 5-6. Weigh-ins for the wrestling tourney will take place on Tuesday, March 5, from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm in the rear equipment cage at Reid Gym. Finale, 79-68 Western Carolina University's basketball team closed out ils season Tuesday night with a 79-68 victory over lowly Pittsburgh-Johnstown, The win gave the Catamounts a final record of 11-14 on the year and dropped Pittsburgh's record to 6-19, WCU's Kirby Thurston, who leads the NCAA in field goal percentages, led all scorers as the Cats' big center poured in 31 points in the contest. Thurston hit on 14 of 20 attempts (70%) and finished the season with an overall shooting percentage of 66%. The 6'9" pivotman also hauled in a game high 19 rebounds. WCU's Albert Toomer hit for 19 points and 10 rebounds to balance the attack, Guard Lee Gibbs added another 15 tallies to round out the big scorers of the night for Western, Pittsburgh-Johnstown had two big guns with center Tim Rybczynski scoring 22 and Curt Miller following with 21 points. Western Carolina's Mike Slump was the only player to close out a career as the Florida forward was the only senior on this year's team, WCU's ski team placed fourth out of five in the Second Annual Ski Race at Cataloochee Ski Area this weekend. Hosted by the WCU and Clemson ski clubs, the race was captured by the University of Tenessee for the second year straight, Appalachian came in second, with Clemson following in third place. The University of Southern Tennessee placed fifth. Cat skier Rick Setliff came in second in the men's overall category. Sixteen skiers from WCU attended the meet, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday March 4th, 5th, & 6th 1 DOLLAR FREE WITH MOVIE CARD 8:00pm in Hoey.
