  • Takin' It To The Streets fa Chuck Vaughan-Lloyd Staff Writer Western Carolinian went out on the campus again this week to find out the students' opinions about the football games. The students finally got their say about the activity during the game. We received many good suggestions for the Spirit committee to think, offer and hopefully utilize soon during the football game. The question that the students answered was one that he or she had to give some thought to before answering. We asked the students; "What improvements would you make in the W.C.U. Cats Football game to include both the game and the audience participation?" Don Haver..."The 'microphone man' puts down the audience for having no spirit. Most of the crowd is drinking and you just can't talk to people that way. I would also like to see the Cat come up into the stands more often. He really gets the people cheering then. The Band should have more pep songs." Debbie Barros... I think we need more Cheerleaders to extend down the crowd more. We also need a Victory Banner that the Cats can run through at the beginning of the game to encourage the spirits of the Cats and the crowd. We're going to beat Clemson!" Tom Atwater..."I don't like the 'microphone man' because he distracts from the game instead of unifying the crowd. The game was better before they got the Where We're From by Rick Lockamy Staff Writer Ninety percent of WCU's students are from North Carolina, the rest are from 34 states outside of North Carolina and several foreign countries. The following is a list of students home counties and the number of students from each. The students are enrolled in Resident Credit Programs in Cullowhee, Asheville, and Cherokee. D „ „,., Buncome Co. 832 Jackson Co. 729 Haywood Co. 364 Meklenburg Co. 359 Forsyth Co. 279 Guilford Co. 244 Henderson Co. 220 Gaston Co. 182 Macon Co. 176 Swain Co. 160 Wake Co. 141 Cleveland Co. 118 Catawba Co. 113 Transylvania Co. 112 Cumberland Co. 103 Cherokee Co. 101 Cabarrus Co. 94 Davidson Co. 76 Burke Co. 74 Iredell Co. 74 Rowan Co. 63 Durham and Orange Co. 80 New Hanover Co. 25 Robeson Co. 14 Brunswick Co. 7 Pitt Co. 7 Pasquotank Co. 6 Ninety out of 100 North Carolina Counties are represented by students at WCU. Counties in Western North Carolina provide the most students. Generally, the further east a county is the less number of WCU students it provides. Two hundred and thirteen students are from Florida. 73 from Georgia. 67 from South Carolina, and 36 from Virginia. There are WCU students from 30 other states. International students come from Nigeria, France, Germany, Jamaica, The Bahamas, Columbia, Vietnam, and Panama. There are 5422 WCU students in Cullowhee, 958 WCU students in Asheville, and 76 WCU students in Cherokee. That's a total of 6456 students. These facts are not final and are expected to change as the semester continues. Many thanks to Dr. J. Creech of the Academic Services Office for providing these figures. 'microphone man'. I really enjoy the game. 1 think we've got a good team, though 1 would like to see us win more often. I'm glad that we have a football team not like UNC-Charlotte." Jill Long..."I don't think people should leave before the end Of the name. The team should come out hitting hard at the first of the game and not pussy-loot around until the second halt 'of the game. The Cheerleaders do a pretty good job...under the circumstances. 1 hope the Cats kill Clemson." Frank Thompson..."The Band and the Cheerleader squad ought to get together more. I believe that the 'microphone man' may be trying too hard and possibly the student body should cheer more together instead of small groups. The groups often end up in competition with each other which causes fragmentation among the student body. The Cheerleaders have an objective of creating spirit so let's cheer together and back the Cats." Elaine Greenlaw..."They may need to alternate the Cheerleaders with the microphone so that they don't get tired. It's hard to be enthusiastic with the football team that we have because they don't plan their plays well. They need to change to a better strategy. I believe that the school spirit is lacking because of the showing that the football team has made." Mike Williams..."Well, for one thing, I feel that the 'microphone man' just talks too much! He should let the Band lead cheers and play much more often during the game. If he would maybe cut down talking and let the Band play more, then perhaps the crowd will react What better. Also, I think the Cheerleaders should go up into the stands and lead cheers right with the peO) lerl Goldlng..."l think we need more school spirit and get behind the Cheerleader* more. 1 think we should have another side to the stadium. 1 hey need more room down toward the bottom of the stadium to seat students. 1 wish the Cats luck against the Clemson is." Don Rahllly..." 1 think that the "microphone man' might be a good idea, but he doesn't seem to keep up with the game and spends too much time arguing with the crowd. The new cheers don't seem to be the crowds favorites and I would like to see them go back to some old well know n cheers." Lisa McAllster..."lf they had more Cheerleaders for the parent section in the stands it would help. They ought to give out helium balloons to be let go when the team enters onto the field. They should make up some songs about the team and get the crowd to sing them. The students should participate in the cheering because it gets the student body involved in the garie. It gets the crowd working together, not as a bunch d' groups. The mascot needs to be with the officials at the toss of the coin acting as an official maybe. The Cat needs to be more outgoing and more active with the student crowd. They should have a pep rally at the UC before the game where everyone follows the Band and Cheerleaders to the stadium. 1 believe that the new Quarterback needs some time to get settled into playing, and the offensive line needs to work harder before the next game."
