  • Catamounts cruise past Bulldogs 16-5 By Ryan Sarda + Wenewsmagazine Steven Strausbaugh hit his fourth homerun in six games, Barrett Shaft and Trey McDaniel each contributed with a solo homer of their own as the Catamount baseball team crushed the Bulldogs 16-5 at Childress Field/Hennon Stadium in Cullowhee. The trio of Strausbaugh, McDaniel, and Shaft combined for 10 of Western's 16 RBI in the game. In the bottom of the first, the Catamounts took an early 1-0 lead after senior Tim Hallam's leadoff double. He advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on Strausbaugh's sacrifice fly towards center field. The Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the second. UNC-As John Whited delivered a single with two outs in the inning. He took advantage of a Catamount error and advanced to second. Kyle Smith of the Bulldogs, followed with an RBI double towards the left field wall. This drove Whited home. In the top of the third, the Bulldogs added one more run to take a 2-1 advantage. However, when the Catamounts stepped to the plate, the Bulldog lead quickly vanished. The Catamounts score five runs in the third inning. Atone Point during the third, the Cats put together five straight hits, and four straight runs. Junior Donnie Wilson started off the run with a single, Barrett Shaft followed with a double, Strausbaugh added a single, and Scott Ward contributed with a double. Following a strikeout, McDaniel hit an RBI double to make the score 6-2 in favor of the Cats. The Catamounts avoided a jam in the top of the fourth. They did not give Up a run despite loading the bases for the Bulldogs to even the game In the bottom of the fourth, the Catamounts continued their dominance of the Bulldogs by scoring 5 more runs. Wilson once again sparked this run after hitting a lead-off double. Following Wilson's double was a two run homerun by Shaft, his first of the season. Sophomore Jonathan Greene answered the homerun with an RBI single, then Blake Murphy ended the scoring in the inning with a double that sent home two. By the end of the fourth inning it was 11-2 in favor of the Catamounts. After giving up two runs in the fifth to make it 11-4, Strausbaugh took control by hitting his fourth homerun of the season in the bottom of the inning when he drilled a three-run homer which changed the score to 14-4. Catamount series 2-1 By Ryan Sarda + Wenewsmagazine The Catamounts played a three game series against the Charleston Southem Buccaneers in Charleston, South Carolina, The Catamounts lost the series 2-1, and the two wins for the Bucs were not easy. They had to come from behind in order to defeat the Catamounts. In game one of the series, the Catamounts lost to the Buccaneers 15-11, and Catamount sophomore Steven Straugbaugh had a perfect game, he went 3-for-3 with two homeruns and an RBI in the first two innings of the game. This gave the Catamounts an early 8-0 lead, but the Buccaneers answered by scoring 14 straight runs, In the bottom of the third, the Buccaneers got on the board scoring five runs on five singles with a walk and a hit batter. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bucs tacked on four more runs, taking a 9-8 advantage in the contest. The drought continued for Western in the fifth, and the Bucs continued their surge with five more runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 14-8 lead. The Cats ended their scoring drought in the sixth when Stausbaugh hit a lead off infield single, which was then followed by Scott Ward advancing to first on a walk. Junior Trey McDaniel sent Stausbaugh home with an RBI single towards left field. The Catamounts soon loaded the bases, but Buccaneers relief pitcher Brandon Roberts, got a fly out and a strikeout to end WCnewsmagazine 27 UNC-A made it a 14-5 after the Catamounts allowed a solo homerun in the top of the sixth inning. That would be the last time that the Bulldogs got to home plate. In the bottom of the seventh, the Catamounts went right back to work and piled in their last two runs of the game to cap off a great day for the Cats. McDaniel hit his second homerun of the season and Western's third of the game making the scoreboard read 16-5. The Catamounts were led by the homerun trio of Strausbaugh, McDaniel, and Shaft, but it was the determination of the entire team that helped the Cais cruise past UNC-A. Scott Ward was 3-of-4 on the day, and Donnie Wilson contributed with 2 hits as well as two runs in the game. Junior Tyler Johnson was credited with the win after pitching 1.2 relief innings. He gave up a homerun but forced two strikeouts. Senior Brandon McDowell, Freshman Bryan Corbett, and Sophomore Greg Holland pitched the final three innings of the game, allowing only one run amongst the three. The Catamounts will be on the road for the next nine games, including a game against the #20 Georgia Bulldogs, as well as their SoCon opener against the Elon Phoenix. The Catamounts also play a three game series against Charleston Southern, as well as the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington. Game two was the same story for the Buccaneers, another victory over the Catamounts from where they had to come from behind. They were able to bounce back after the Cats took a 3-0 lead in the second, to win the game 7-4 to take a two game edge over the Cats. The Bucs got on the board in the third inning, cutting the score the 3-1, and after some fielding errors by the Catamounts, the Bucs were able to take a 4-3 lead at the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Barett Shaft tied the game up at 4 apiece in the fifth after scoring on an error by Charleston Souther. In the bottom of the fifth, the Bucs scored one extra run to take a 5-4 lead and break the tie. In the sixth inning, the Buccaneers scored the final two runs of the game to put the nail in the coffin The Buccaneers took advantage of fielding, and pitching mistakes by the Catamounts en route to a 7-4 victory. In game three of the series, the Catamounts avenged their two earlier losses to the Buccaneers by winning 11- 1. Sophomore Blake Murphy provided the offense for the Catamounts as he went 3-of-4 with a two run homerun in the game. Pitcher Brock Thornburg looked very Impressive on the mound, He threw six strikeouts and no walks, and gave up one unearned run as well as only two hits in the game. The Catamounts next series is a 2 game series against the Seahawks of UNC-Wilmington on March 7 and 8. |
