The Cats had an explosive first half to build a seven point lead going into halftime. The Catamounts then held the Spartans off in the second half to win the game by 14. Leading the way for Western were Antonio Russell, Corey Muirhead and Kyle Greathouse. Russell scored 17 points on 3 for 5 shooting from long range as he continued to be the leading scorer for the Catamounts this year. Muirhead continued what has been an excellent stretch of games lately as he scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Greathouse had 13 points as he shot 3 for 6 from three-point territory. The win improved Western's record to 13-15 overall and 7-6 in the SoCon. The Catamounts were just too strong in the first half as they jumped out of the gates quickly. The Cats hit 6 of 12 in the first half from long-range. Overall, the Cats out-rebounded UNCG, 35-26, and shot 47.1 percent from the field and 72.2 percent from the charity stripe. The Spartans only managed 42 percent from the field and 35 percent (7 of 20) from the free throw line. Kyle Hines got the Spartans the first basket of the game with a lay-up but Muirhead struck right back with a lay-up of his own to tie the game at 4-4. After a Greathouse three-pointer, Wester took a 7-4 lead and never trailed the rest of the game. The Cats went on a 14-4 run after the basket to push the lead to 21-8 with 11:51 left in the half, Russell and Greathouse both hit two 3-pointers a piece to pace the run. The Cats kept the lead near 10 points the rest of the half, until Ricky Hickman hit a jump shot and was fouled with 33 seconds left. This cut the lead to 39-32 going into the half. Hines dunked the ball to start the second half and cut the lead to five. Hines hit a lay-up to cut the lead back to five in a couple of minutes, but David Berghoefer battled back both times to keep WCU up by seven. After going up 43-36 with 18:21, Wester only scored two points over the next six Elon Baseball defeat Western 16-3 to win se By Ryan Sarda + WGnewsmagazine Even a two-run homerun in the first inning by sophomore Steve Strausbaugh was not enough for the Catamounts to stop the Elon Phoenix. The Phoenix manhandled the Catamounts 16-3 at Elons Latham Park. The early 2-0 lead by The Catamounts would not last much longer than the first inning. The Phoenix got on the board in the bottom of the first after Donnie Jobe and Chris Price both hit doubles which soon compiled into run that helped cut the Cats advantage to 2-1 In the third, Jobe and Price were right back to work. Triple by Elon's Chris Vasami would soon tum into two runs for the Phoenix, as Jobe and Price ran home on the triple. Vasami would score on the very next play after a balk by Catamount pitcher Brock Thornburg, the score became 4-2 in favor of Elon, The Phoenix (12-6, 2-1 SoCon) were not quite done yet. in the same inning, Thornburg walked Elons Patrick Irvine and Grant Rembert. Following the walks, Elon's Robert Rodebaugh drove them home after hitting an RBI double to right center-field. The score quickly changed from 4-2, to 6-2 with Elon having a commanding lead. In the fourth inning, in an attempt to try and bring the Catamounts back in it, Junior Trey McDaniel hit his fourth homerun of the season to the right field wall. The Catamounts loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, and looked to draw even with the Phoenix. However, a line drive to centerfield was caught by Grant Rembert, ending the inning for Wester. In the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix added four more runs to the minutes. Luckily, they held the Spartans to only two points over those same six minutes. With 14:13 left in the second half, Greathouse missed a wide-open lay-up, but Berghoefer tried to follow the miss with a dunk. Berghoefer could not Keep hold of the ball, though, and ended up missing the dunk but still grabbing the rim. The refs called a technical on Berghoefer for hanging on the rim. The very questionable call raised quite a few chants from the crowd. The call would become even more important later on. The Spartans final gasp of effort came at 10:12 as Hines hit a pair of buckets to cut the Catamount lead to seven. Russell and the Cats answered back with a jumper and a free throw to push the lead back to 10 with 9:09 left. The Cats would keep that double digit lead the rest of the game before finally winning 67-3, but before winning there was a call that incensed the Western students, With 5:05 left in the game, Berghoefer grabbed a rebound, but a Spartan defender tried to tie up the ball. Berghoefer swung around trying to {get the ball loose when his arm slipped and almost hit the defender. The refs, after consulting with an irate UNCG coach Mike Dement, called a second technical foul on Berghoefer and ejected him from the game. The fans went crazy as the refs had blown two big calls that led to a senior being ejected from his final home game. Luckily, the game was not decided by such horrible calls and instead decided by a great Catamount effort. The Spartans were led in the loss by the big man Hines. The 6-foot-6 Hines finished the night with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Hickman also had a good game for UNCG as he finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Hickman hit 2 of 5 from long-range to expand his streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 23, the third-longest span in Spartan history. The loss dropped the Spartans record to 11-16 overall and 4-8 in the SoCon. score after Elon's Jordy Snyder, Jobe and Ryan Addison walked to load the bases, with no outs in the inning. Junior Tyler Johnson came in to the game to pitch for Thornburg. Johnson's first batter was Chris Price, and he cleared the bases with a grand slam home run making the score 10-3 with the Phoenix having a commanding lead over the Cats, In the fifth, The Catamounts (6-8, 1-2 SoCon) looked to cut into the lead and try to work themselves back in it. Sophomore Grey Gregory was on the second, while sophomore Blake Murphy was on first with two outs. Junior Scott Ward drove Murphy and Gregory home with a double. However, the runs were erased from the scoreboard after Ward's foot did not touch first base while running towards second. The Catamounts errors and mistakes completely took them out of the game. The Phoenix compiled a 10 run lead in the bottom of the fifth, and in the sixth the lead was 11 after Elon tallied in another run. The 16-3 score came in the bottom of the eighth after the Phoenix reached base on four walks, and two singles. Elon pitcher Matt Chastain improved to 4-0 on the season, giving up seven hits, three runs, and three strikeouts in just six innings of work. For the Catamounts, Thomburg suffered the loss, causing him to fall to 1-1 on the season. He allowed five hits, nine runs, and six walks in the game. Grey Gregory was the only main source of offense for the Cats, he hit two of Western's eight total hits in the game.
